Big third period helps #1 SCSU gain 5-1 victory over Miami

The Huskies gained an early lead in the contest with a goal by Jack Poehling at :38 of the first period. Ryan Poehling provided the solo assist on the play, which was Jack Poehling's sixth goal of the season.

Miami tied the game at 2:22 of the second period with a power play goal by Grant Hutton, which was assisted by Josh Melnick and Gordie Green.
The Huskies then charted the game winning goal at 3:15 of the second period with a power play marker by Jimmy Schuldt. Robby Jackson and Ryan Poehling each had assists on the play, which was Schuldt's eighth goal of the year. The assist was Ryan Poehling's 18th of the year and it was Jackson's 13th of the season. The goal also helped Schuldt set a team record for most career power play goals with 19. In the third period, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 12-5 and outscored them 3-0. The period commenced with a goal by Ryan Poehling at 4:04 on the power play. Blake Lizotte and Schuldt each had assists on the play. Ryan Poehling stretched SCSU's lead to 4-1 after he converted a steal into an unassisted breakaway goal at 7:45 of the third period.
The Huskies completed the night with a goal by Patrick Newell at 18:44 of the third with assists from Blake Lizotte and Spencer Meier. On the night, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 31-21. On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-5 and Miami was 1-of-5. David Hrenak was SCSU's goalie of record with 20 saves in the contest as his season record improved to 15-3-1.
SCSU and Miami will complete its weekend series on Saturday, Feb. 2 with a 6:07 p.m. game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The game has been designated as Youth Night with all kids up to grade 12 admitted free with a paid adult (walk up tickets only). The game will also feature $1 hot dogs in the HBNHC concession stands.
