WAYNE, NEB. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team has gotten used to total domination. The Huskies have beaten their opponents by at least 10 points in three consecutive games and were looking to make it four against Wayne State College Friday evening. St. Cloud State did just that, as the team cruised to a 91-79 victory over the top team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) South Division.
The Huskies trailed 42-40 at the half after shooting .615 from the floor and .556 from beyond the arc. Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) led the way for St. Cloud State in terms of scoring in the opening 20 minutes, as he scored an impressive 21 points in the first half on 10-13 shooting. Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) added 12 points on 4-4 shooting, while fellow senior Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) broke the school record for career blocks before the 10 minute mark, as he surpassed Andrew Bernstetter with 175 blocks in his career as a Husky.
St. Cloud State put on a scoring clinic early in the second half, as the team opened with a 17-5 run to take a 57-47 lead over Wayne State with 14:52 remaining in the second half. From there, the Huskies extended their lead to 75-60, thanks in large part to Davis and Jace Kitchen (Dekalb, Ill. / Dekalb). The two seniors were on fire, to say the least, as Davis scored 34 points before the 10 minutes mark and Kitchen's threes gave him 14 at the same mark.
From there, the Huskies kept pouring it on, though the Wildcats managed to hang in there for most of the second half. Still, the scoring power of Davis and company proved to be too much, as St. Cloud State cruised to its eventually 91-79 victory over Wayne State.
Davis' domination lasted all 40 minutes of the game, as he tallied a career-high 46 points in 39 minutes of play for the Huskies. After scoring 42 against Bemidji State earlier this season, Davis becomes the lone Husky in program history with two 40+ point performances and ranks third all-time in single game scoring. Kitchen finished the game with a career-high 21 points on 4-5 shooting from beyond the arc, while Theisen finished the game with 15 points.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 17-6 with a 12-5 record in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, February 9 when they take on Augustana University at 5:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
