Newell's goal lifts #1 Huskies to a 5-4 victory in overtime

St. Cloud State University senior forward Patrick Newell provided a pair of goals late in the game to lift the #1 St. Cloud State University Huskies (21-4-3, 13-2-3 NCHC) to a 5-4 overtime victory over visiting Colorado College (11-14-4, 5-9-3 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Newell sealed the victory with his overtime game winner at 3:53 with assists from Robby Jackson and Jack Ahcan. The goal was Newell's second of the game and his fourth point of the night. On the season, Newell now has 15 goals and 17 assists for a team leading 32 points. The assist for Ahcan was his third of the night and his 22nd for the Huskies in 2018-19, while Jackson now has 15 helpers this winter for the Huskies.
The game opened in the first period with the Huskies charging to a 2-0 lead. Jackson opened the scoring at 10:47 of the first period with assists to Newell and Blake Lizotte. The Huskies pushed the lead to 2-0 with a marker by Sam Hentges at 12:37 of the first with assists going to Easton Brodzinski and Spencer Meier. The goal was Hentges' sixth of the season.
Colorado College rallied with four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 by the end of the second period. Grant Cruikshank opened the run with a power play goal at 19:23 of the first period. In the second period, Kristian Blumenschei scored at 5:42 to tie the game before Cruikshank posted his second PPG of the night at 7:36 of the second. To complete the second, CC's Trevor Gooch made it 4-2 with his goal at 10:19. Â
After Gooch's goal, SCSU replaced starting netminder David Hrenak with Jeff Smith. In the final 33:24 minutes of play, Smith made 11 saves including three in the OT session. Overall, SCSU outshot the Tigers 48-24 in the game and gave Smith his fifth win of the year.
In the third period, Nick Perbix got the Huskies back into the scoring column with his goal at 16:09. This was Perbix' third goal of the season and assists were provided by Newell and Ahcan. The Huskies tied the contest at 17:05 of the third with Newell's first goal of the evening. Ahcan and Jimmy Schuldt each had assists on the play. Of note, the point was Schuldt's 108 career point at SCSU. He now ranks first among SCSU defenseman for career points as he moves ahead of Kelly Hultgren, who had 107 points from 1991-95.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-6 in the game and CC was 2-of-3.
