
#1 SCSU Men's Hockey to finish regular season with home games on March 8-9

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (25-4-3, 17-2-3 NCHC) will finish its regular season schedule with a pair of games at home against #3 Minnesota Duluth (21-9-2, 14-7-1 NCHC).  The game on Mar. 8 will begin at 7:38 p.m. and the game on Mar. 9 will start at 4:07 p.m.  Both games will be played at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

SENIOR SALUTE - PENROSE CUP CELEBRATION:  The Huskies will salute their 2018-19 seniors in a post-game ceremony on Saturday, March 9.  The Huskies will also celebrate its 2018-19 NCHC regular season championship with a special Penrose Cup celebration after the game on March 9.  Fans will also have an opportunity to see the Penrose Cup trophy in the lobby of the HBNHC during the game on Mar. 9.

IN THE POLLS:  The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll.  In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #1 ranking. Â
NCHC CHAMPS:  The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC.  SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
ALL-TIME LEADER:  SCSU senior Jimmy Schuldt is now the team's all-time lead for points by a defenseman with 111.  Schuldt now has 37g/74a for 110 points.  He moves past Kelly Hultgren, who had 28g/79a from 1991-95.  Schuldt is the team's all-time leader for goals by a defenseman with 37 and power play goals by a defenseman with 19 during his career...on the topic of Schuldt, he currently leads all NCHC blueliners with 28 points (9g/19a) this season.  He ranks 13th in the nation with .88 ppg among DI defensemen.
LAST WEEKEND  Last week at WMU, the Huskies tallied a 5-4 win on Mar. 1 and an 8-2 victory on Mar. 2.  Blake Lizotte had 2g/4a in the weekend series to pace SCSU, while Robby Jackson had 2g/3a.  Jeff Smith made 38 saves in the win on Mar. 2 and David Hrenak had 36 saves on Mar. 1.  Of note, SCSU allowed season game-highs of 40 shots apiece in each game.
NATIONAL LEADERS:Â The following is a rundown of where the Huskies rank in the current NCAA stat categories:Â Â Power Play - 14th (22.1%), Offense - 2nd (4.03 gpg), Defense - 9th (2.09 gapg), Scoring Margin - 1st (1.94 margin), Winning Percentage - 1st (.828), Penalty Kill - 3rd (88.5%).
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Huskies are 13-0-1 at home this season and 14-1-1 in games played in the state of Minnesota. Of note, SCSU's best record at home in a single season was a 14-1-3 mark in 1993-94.  SCSU was 16-3-1 at home in 2001-02 and 16-3-1 at home in 1996-97.  In addition, SCSU was 16-3-2 at home in 2017-18 and 13-3-0 at home in 2013-13.  On the road this season, SCSU owns an 12-4-2 record.Â
AWARD WINNERS: Blake Lizotte earned NCHC Offensive Player of the Week and NCAA #2 Star of the Week for his 6-point effort vs. WMU on Mar. 1-2.  Lizotte had three assists in the 5-4 win on Mar. 1 at WMU and finished the weekend with two goals and one assist on Mar. 2.  He scored the game winner in the 8-2 victory over the Broncos at Lawson Arena.  On the season, Lizotte now has 13g/21a for 34 points.  He a team-high five game point streak into the weekend games against UMD.
RANKINGS:  In the all-important Pairwise rankings, St. Cloud State and UMass received the top spot with a 58 apiece.  In the KRACH DI rankings, SCSU was rate #1 with a rating of 689.9.  Of note, SCSU has gained 13 NCAA bids since 1989 and the Huskies have advanced to NCAA tournament play five times since 2013 (2018, 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013). SCSU has been ranked #1 in the polls for 14 weeks this season.
HOW LOW CAN YOU GO:  SCSU has allowed just 67 goals (2.09 goals allowed per game) this season in 32 games played.  The current team record for fewest goals allowed in a season is 90, which was set in 2015-16 over 41 games (2.20 goals allowed per game).  On the other hand, SCSU has scored 129 goals this season (4.03 goals per game).  The Huskies set a team record in 2001-02 with 179 goals scored (4.26 goals per game).
AND A FEW MORE ITEMS:  The Huskies will bring an eight-game unbeaten streak into the series vs. UMD and a five-game winning streak into the games on Mar. 8-9...SCSU has already clinched home ice heading into the final regular season weekend of play.  The Huskies will host the best of 3 series at the HBNHC on Mar. 15-17.  SCSU has hosted first round play in the NCHC tourney in 2014, 2016 and 2018.  SCSU is 6-5 in NCHC first round games and the Huskies are 4-3 in the first round games played at the HBNHC.  SCSU has advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in 2015, 2016 and 2018...SCSU is 14-0-1 when Patrick Newell scores a goal this season...the Huskies are undefeated this season if they score three-or-more goals in a game and they are undefeated in games where they allow two or less goals in a game...Patrick Newell leads the team on the plus/minus at +29 and Jack Ahcan is second at +26....Robby Jackson's 115 career points ranks him 20th on the all-time SCSU scoring charts (DI only).  He trails David Morley, who ranks 19th with 118 career points.  Ryan Lasch is the team's all-time scoring leader with 183 points from 2006-10...Jackson leads the team this winter with 103 shots, while Newell paces SCSU with 18 goals.

WORLD JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT: Forward Ryan Poehling helped Team USA gain a second place finish at the 2019 IIHF World Juniors.  Poehling was voted the MVP in the tournament, makde the tourney All-Star Team and was voted the Best Forward in the tournament.  He had five goals and three assists in tournament play (3rd best).  Poehling competed for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2018, where Team USA won a Bronze Medal.  Poehling joined Mark Parrish (1996 & 1997) as the other Husky who has played in two World Junior tourneys for Team USA.  A total of 10 SCSU players have skated for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors since 1991.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:Â Â Patrick Newell's 18 goals this season are the most in a season by a Husky since Joey Benik had 23 in 2015-16.
UMD NOTES: In play against UMD, the Huskies own a 68-51-9 series lead dating back to 1946-47.  SCSU is 65-47-8 during the Division I era of the season.  In the last five games of this series, SCSU owns a 3-2-0 edge and 5-5-0 in the last 10 games of the series...earlier this year at Amsoil Arena, the Huskies lost a 3-1 game on Jan. 11 and won 4-2 in Jan. 12.  Last year at SCSU, the Huskies swept the defending national champion Bulldogs 5-3 and 5-0 on Nov. 3-4, 2017...SCSU head coach Brett Larson is a former assistant coach at UMD and also played collegiate hockey for the Bulldogs...Justin Richards (10g/17a) and Scott Perunovich (3g/24a) both base UMD with 27 points apiece.  Hunter Shepherd is tops in goal with a 1.89 GAA and a 21-9-2 record...last week, UMD swept a series vs. Miami at home by scores of 4-2 and 6-5...SCSU is 10-7-2 in games played in the Amsoil Arena and 35-18-5 in games played in St. Cloud.
