SCSU earns an unprecedented four CCM/AHCA All-America awards in 2018-19

BUFFALO, NY — St. Cloud State University men's hockey earned an unprecedented four All-America awards on Friday, April 13, in Buffalo, N.Y. SCSU was among the 19 different Division I hockey-playing schools, which can celebrate players honored as CCM/AHCA Hockey All-Americans for the 2018-19 season.
Out of the 25 college hockey players honored as All-Americans, SCSU lead the way with four honorees. This group included All-America West First Team award winners senior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt (Minnetonka, Minn.) and senior forward Patrick Newell (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). SCSU Huskies' named to the 2018-19 All-America West Second Team were sophomore forward Blake Lizotte (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes H.S.) and junior defenseman Jack Ahcan (Savage, Minn./Burnsville H.S.).
This marks the first time in the history of the program that SCSU has gained four All-America awards in one season. The previous season high for All-America awards for SCSU was two in 2012-13 (Drew LeBlanc and Nick Jensen) and two in 1981-82 (Dan Pratt and Rory Eidness). At the NCAA DI level, SCSU has now gained 17 All-American honors. Schuldt becomes SCSU's second player at the DI level to earn All-America honors twice and the fifth player overall. In past years, Bobby Goepfert gained All-America status in 2005-06 and 2006-07 (West Second Team), while Mike Brodzinski was a two-time All-American at SCSU in 1985-86 and 1986-87, Dave Reichel was an All-American in 1977-78 and 1978-79 and Pat Sullivan was an All-American in 1973-74 and 1974-75.
A three-year team captain for the Huskies, Schuldt is a two-time Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist and was selected as a Hobey Baker Hat Trick (top 3) finalist for 2018-19. He is the fourth SCSU player to be selected as a Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist. The NCHC Player of the Year and Defensive Defenseman of the Year, Schuldt ranked among the nation's top blueliners with 10 goals, 25 assists and 35 points in 39 games played. He finished his four-year career as a three-time team captain and played in 156 consecutive games at SCSU. He departs campus as the Huskies' all-time leader among defensemen with 118 points, 38 goals, 80 assists and 19 power play goals.
Schuldt was recently named to the All-CHN First Team for 2019 and as a semifinalist for the Sullivan Award in 2019. A two-time All-NCHC First Team award winner at SCSU, Schuldt led the Huskies to a 30-6-3 overall record and a first place finish in the NCHC with a 19-2-3 record. The six losses sets a new team standard for fewest losses in a season by the Huskies at the NCAA DI level. Of note, SCSU earned the number overall seed for the 2019 NCAA Division I tournament. Schuldt earned NCHC Defensive Player of the Week three times during the recent 2018-19 season. Schuldt made his NHL debut with the Vegas Golden Knights on April 6.
Newell was named the NCHC Forward of the Year and finished the year as SCSU's and the NCHC's top scorer with 21 goals and 47 points. He also had 26 assists, 124 shots and was an impressive +35 on the plus/minus in 2018-19. In his four seasons with the Huskies, Newell notched 120 career points, 38 goals and 82 assists in 145 games played. He was selected as a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist in 2018-19 and recently signed a professional contract with the New York Rangers of the NHL at the end of the 2018-19 season.
An All-NCHC Second Team selection at defense, Ahcan led SCSU with 28 assists during the 2018-19 season. He also posted six goals and 34 points for the Huskies this winter. Ahcan was +30 on the plus/minus this season with 55 blocked shots and 79 shots on goal to his credit. In three season at SCSU, Ahcan has compiled 14 goals, 64 assists and 74 points for the Huskies. Lizotte gained All-NCHC First Team honors during his sophomore year in 2018-19. He ranked second on the team with 42 points, which included 14 goals and a team-leading 28 assists. He posted a +28 on the plus/minus and had 69 shots on goal for the Huskies in 2018-19. At the end of the season, Lizotte signed a pro contract with the Los Angeles Kings and made his NHL debut on April 6 in a game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Huskies were ranked as the nation's number one team 16 weeks over the 2018-19 season and entered the 2019 NCAA Division I tournament as the overall number one seed for the second consecutive season. The Huskies finished a very productive season, which included 30 wins (3rd in the team record) and set a new school record for fewest losses in a year with six. SCSU won the 2018-19 NCHC regular season title for the second consecutive season and also set a new team record with only 85 goals allowed this winter. The old record of 90 goals allowed was set in 2015-16. SCSU also set a season record for fewest power play goals allowed at 17, while the old record of 18 PPGs allowed was set in 2007-08.

2018-19 CCM/AHCA All-America Team Notes:

- Six players had been recognized as All-Americans previously.
- There are 20 players from 12 different U.S. states, 4 Canadian players from three provinces and one player from Germany.
- The source of the most players: six from Minnesota.
- The junior class dominates: no freshmen, 6 sophomores, 13 juniors and six seniors.
- The conference breakdown: six each from Hockey East and the NCHC, five from the Big Ten, four from ECAC Hockey, two from Atlantic Hockey and one each from the WCHA and independent Arizona State.
- 18 players participated in the NCAA Tournament.
