St. Cloud State men's hockey charts big victory over #8 UMD, 2-1

In a battle against the nation's #8 ranked team and the defending NCAA Division I champions, St. Cloud State University men's hockey (7-10-4, 4-7-0 NCHC) scored a 2-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth (12-7-2, 7-2-2 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
In a tight defensive battle, the Huskies opened the game's scoring at 11:59 with a goal by Luke Jaycox that included assists from Nolan Walker and Easton Brodzinski. This was Jaycox' third goal of the season and it marked the ninth assist of the season for Walker and the 10th helper of the year for Brodzinski.
The Bulldogs tied the contest at 15:13 of the first period with a power play marker by Kobe Roth, which included assists from Noah Cates and Jackson Cates. The game remained at a deadlock through the end of the first period and into the early going of the second period before the Huskies netted the game winner.
Rookie forward Chase Brand stepped into the spotlight with the GWG at 4:11 of the second period, which included assists from Spencer Meier and Ondrej Trejbal. The goal was Brand's fourth of the campaign, while Meier now has four assists and Trejbal has five assists in 2019-20.
Both teams then went into lockdown defense as the Huskies' number one star of the game David Hrenak played shutout hockey through the second half of the game. He made 32 saves in the contest and had an impressive 18 saves in the third period alone, which saw the Bulldogs play for 1:39 with the extra attacker and an open net.
The Huskies defense was also impressive with 15 blocked shots. Senior Clark Kuster led the way with four blocks and captain Jack Ahcan had three blocks for SCSU.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and its penalty kill was 4-of-4 after allowing that first power play goal of the game.
