The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (6-10-4, 3-7-0 NCHC) will continue its 2019-20 season with games at home against #8 Minnesota Duluth (12-6-2, 7-1-2 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The game on Jan. 17 will start at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Jan. 18 will begin at 4:07 p.m. Of note, the game on Jan. 18 will have the early start since it is one of the featured games for Fox Sports North Plus' TV schedule for Hockey Day Minnesota 2020. TOP 20 RESULTS: SCSU is 3-5-1 in games played against top 20 ranked teams this season, which includes a 7-2 victory over Minnesota State on Dec. 28. SCSU has also gained wins this season over nationally ranked #11 Northeastern and #19 Northern Michigan and a 3-3 tie against NMU.

DENVER NOTES:Last weekend, the Huskies lost a pair of NCHC games at Denver by scores of 6-3 on Jan. 10 and 5-3 on Jan. 11. On Jan. 10, SCSU goals in the contest were posted by Jack Poehling (PP), Easton Brodzinski (PP) and Chase Brand (with :03 left in the 3rd). SCSU allowed a season-high 48 shots in the game. The last time the Huskies allowed more than 48 shots in a game before last night was a 63 shot night on Mar. 12, 2011 vs. UMD in a triple OT game. The last regulation game with more than 48 shots allowed was 55 shots vs. Omaha on Feb. 25, 2011. David Hrenak made 42 saves in the game, which was the most saves by a SCSU goalie since Jeff Smith had 42 vs. Minnesota State on Oct. 7, 2017...on Jan. 11, SCSU goals were tallied by Jake Wahlin, Will Hammer and Nick Perbix. In the game, Wahlin had 1g/2a and Hammer added 1g/1a. Nolan WalkerOPPONENT NOTES: In play against UMD, the Huskies own a 70-52-9 series lead dating back to 1946-47. SCSU is 67-48-8 during the Division I era of the season. In the last five games of this series, SCSU owns a 3-2-0 edge and 6-4-0 in the last 10 games of the series...in the last meeting between these two teams, UMD scored a 3-2 OT win in the title game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff on Mar. 23, 2019 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul...last in St. Cloud, the Huskies scored a pair of 4-3 win over the Bulldogs...in Duluth, SCSU split the weekend series with a 3-1 loss on Jan. 11 and a 4-2 win on Jan. 12...SCSU head coach Brett Larson is a former assistant coach at UMD and also played collegiate hockey for the Bulldogs...SCSU is 37-18-5 in games played against UMD in St. Cloud...Scott Perunovich leads UMD with 25 points (3g/22a) this season and Noah Cates has 11g/9a for 20 points...Hunter Shepherd is UMD's top goalie with a 12-6-2 record and a 2.35 GAA...Jack Ahcan has scored 3g/10a vs. UMD during his college career.
WALKER THIS WAY: Sophomore forward Nolan Walker charted two asssits in the Huskies' game on Jan. 10. He started the season by scoring only two points in his first 13 games played. Since that point, Walker has scored six point in his last six games played. An NCHC All-Rookie selection in 2019, Walker now has eight assists this season and 8g/27a in his career.
GETTING CLOSER:Jack Ahcan, a two time NCHC Defensive Player of the Week this season, now has 95 career points (18g/77a) and is fourth on the Huskies' career points by a defenseman list. SCSU's all-time leader on defense is Jimmy Schuldt, who had 118 points from 2015-19. Ahcan also ranks 16th in the team records with 77 career assists and 37th with 95 points. Ahcan is on the verge of joining SCSU's 100 point club and would become the 34th place (all games played at the DI level) to join the 100 point club. Last year's 100-point club entries were Jimmy Schuldt, Robby Jackson and Patrick Newell.
FIRST POINT: SCSU freshman forward Kyler Kupka (Camorse, Alberta) scored his first collegiate point with an assist on Jake Wahlin's goal in the second period against Denver on Jan. 11. Kupka played at Camrose of the AJHL during the 2018-19 season.
SUPER 70:Easton Brodzinski's goal on Jan. 10 was his 70th career point at SCSU. In 97 games played, Brodzinski now has 38 career goals and 32 career assists. He also leads the Huskies this season with eight goals and four power play goals. A special team's expert, Brodzinski has 16 power play goals to his credit during his collegaite career, which ranks among SCSU's top 25 in that category.
HALF CENTURY: Jack Poehling scored on the power play during the Huskies' game at DU on Jan. 10, which was his 50th career point at SCSU. In 130 games played, Jack Poehling now has 25 goals and 25 assists for the Huskies...which includes four goals and five assists this winter. Poehling is +5 this sesaon, which ranks second on the team behind +/- leader Clark Kuster at +6.
SCSU NOTES: Captain Jack Ahcan has played in 116 consecutive games at SCSU...for the second consecutive weekend, Jaxson Castor and David Hrenak shared netminding duties for the Huskies. Hrenak started the contest on Jan. 10 and Castor gained the start on Jan. 11. Hrenak owns a 3.12 GAA and Castor is 2.94 GAA. In his career at SCSU, Hrenak owns a 42-19-8 record and a 2.38 GAA. He is a Los Angeles Kings draft pick...Will Hammer scored his third career goal during the Huskies' game on Jan. 11. Of note, the Huskies' second half schedule is a tough one. After playing #4 Denver on Jan. 10-11, SCSU will host #8 UMD on Jan. 17-18, played at RV Western Michigan on Jan. 24-25, and then finish with #2 North Dakota on Feb. 21-22, #4 Denver on Feb. 28-29 and #8 UMD on Mar. 6-7.

NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
