ABERDEEN, S.D. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball game opened the weekend with tough road loss to a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Friday night. The Huskies fell to the conference's top team Northern State University 88-71 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
The Huskies trailed the Wolves 44-27 after the first half despite a strong 20 minutes from Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington). The two guards combined to score 18 of the team's 27 first half points, while St. Cloud State's defense managed to hold three-time NSIC Player of the Week Parker Fox to eight points. Unfortunately, the Huskies had no answer for Mason Stark, as he scored a game-leading 13 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.
There was hope for St. Cloud State to pull back in the game, as its defense continued to hold the fort against the red-hot Wolves. Unfortunately, the Huskies could gain any momentum offensively. A handful of times, St. Cloud State would pull within 13 of Northern State's lead and seemed to gain momentum but couldn't get any closer, as the team fell by the final score of 88-71.
Donaldson ended as the team's leading scorer, as he tallied 19 points on 7-12 shooting with a 4-4 mark from the charity stripe. Fellow freshman Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) added 16 points in the loss, while Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) added 11 points and a team-leading six rebounds.
With the loss, the Huskeis overall record now stands at 10-9 and the team in 7-6 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will look to get back on track Saturday, as the team faces MSU-Moorhead at 5:30 p.m. in Moorhead, Minnesota.
