1/28/2020 2:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team has turned into road warriors as of late. After spending every other weekend at home and on the road, the Huskies will travel for the second consecutive weekend, heading to Iowa and Southern Minnesota for two more Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games against Upper Iowa University and Winona State University.
St. Cloud State has put together its most successful month of the season in January, posting an 8-0 record with half those wins coming away from the comforts of Halenbeck Hall. In fact, some of the Huskies biggest wins have come on the road, as they are coming off a huge series sweep over Northern State and MSU-Moorhead. This weekend will be just as key as St. Cloud State opens with a 5:30 p.m. Friday tipoff against Upper Iowa before facing Winona State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast are all available for fans who cannot make the trek to Fayette, Iowa and Winona, Minnesota. Score updates can also be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB) when time allows.
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's road series:
5 – All five of the Huskies regular starters are averaging over 10.0 points per game this season, making them one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the NSIC. Senior guard Madelin Dammann (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) has been St. Cloud State's top points producer all season long, averaging a team-leading 12.9 points per game on .438 shooting from the floor and a team-leading .409 mark from three-point range. Right on her heals is junior Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) whose consistency has allowed her to average 12.6 points in all 18 of St. Cloud State's games this season. Joining them in the 10.0+ average club? Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) averaging 11.8 points, Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire) at 10.9 points and Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) who is averaging 10.8 points per game in 16 contests this season.
0 – While the Huskies have five players averaging double-digits in scoring, none of them rank in the top-10 in the NSIC in points per game average this season. In fact, Dammann's 12.9 average currently puts her at No. 16 in the conference points per game standings, while Wortz is just a few paces behind, coming in at No. 18. The two also rank in the top-20 in conference points per game, only the slots are reversed, as Wortz ranks 16th with a 12.9 average vs. conference opponents and Dammann 17th at 12.8 points per game.
31 – Kilboten is once again putting together a strong defensive season, as she's racked up 31 blocks in 18 games this season for a 1.7 blocks per game average. Another impressive blocking season has allowed Kilboten to move up the all-time rankings, as she now has 115 blocks in her career as a Husky. With one block against Upper Iowa or Winona State this weekend, she will move to a tie for sixth all-time with former standout Brenda Meyer and could potentially move into the top-5 by the end of the season.
4/8 – The hottest teams in the NSIC are set to meet on Saturday in Winona, Minnesota, as the red-hot Warriors play host to the sizzling Huskies at 3:30 p.m. Thanks to its sweep of Northern State and MSU-Moorhead, and by in large Winona State's thrilling win over Sioux Falls, St. Cloud State owns the longest active win streak in the NSIC at eight games, while the Warriors are riding a four-game win streak thanks to their own sweep of SMSU and the nationally ranked Cougars last weekend.
12/13/19 – The Upper Iowa Peacocks broke its nearly three-year long NSIC losing streak on December 13, 2019, as they upended Concordia-St. Paul 65-63 in Fayette, Iowa. The win marked Upper Iowa's first against a conference opponent since February 11, 2017, when the team defeated the Golden Bears 51-43 again in Fayette, Iowa. In fact, the Peacocks two NSIC wins this season have come in the comforts of their home gym, as they defeated Minnesota-Crookston 82-67 in mid-January.
