Jack Poehling GWG lifts Huskies to a 4-2 win over Miami

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-12-4, 6-9-0 NCHC) returned to the win column on Friday, Jan. 31 with a 4-2 victory over Miami University (6-15-4, 3-10-2 NCHC) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The win extended SCSU's unbeaten streak against the RedHawks to 10 games and it also snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies. The two teams will complete their NCHC series at the HBNHC with a 6:07 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 1. After a scoreless first period in which the Huskies outshot Miami 10-3, the RedHawks scored first with a goal by Alec Capstick at 2:25 of the second period. SCSU rallied at 8:47 of the second with a goal by Zach Okabe, who was assisted on the play by Nick Perbix and Kyler Kupka. This was Okabe's fifth goal of the season and it also marked Perbix' seventh assist of the year and Kupka's second assist of 2019-20.
Miami took a 2-1 lead less than a minute later with a goal by Matt Barry at 9:35. To finish out the second period's scoring, SCSU's Easton Brodzinski tied the game at 2-2 with his team-leading 10th goal of the season. SCSU blueliners Ondrej Trejbal and Spencer Meier each posted assists on the play for the Huskies.
In the third period, SCSU's Jack Poehling earned the game's number one star with a blazing slap shot that beat Miami goalie Ryan Larkin to make the tally 3-2 at 13:45 of the third. Micah Miller and Nick Poehling each had assists on the goal. This was Jack Poehling's fifth goal of the year and his 11th point of 2019-20. Miller added his sixth assist of the year on the play and it was Nick Poehling's 10th helper of the campaign.
To cap the night, Miller scored an empty net goal at 19:53 of the third to make the final score 4-2. Jack Poehling posted the solo assist on the goal, which was Miller's fifth of the year. Of note, Jack Poehling now has seven assists this season for the Huskies.
In the nets, SCSU's David Hrenak charted 19 saves to gain the victory and also to improve his season record to 8-8-4 in 2019-20. Larkin had 31 saves in the game for Miami as the Huskies outshot the RedHawks 35-21 in the contest. On the power play, SCSU was 0-1 and Miami was 0-3.
