#1 St. Cloud State wrestling posts a 33-16 win over Western Colorado

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (6-0, 2-0 NSIC) opened the new year with a key 33-16 victory over non-conference rival #23 Western Colorado (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) on Sunday, Jan. 5 before a large SCSU Wrestling Alumni Day crowd in Halenbeck Hall.
The victory extended SCSU's consecutive match win streak to 54, which ties a team and NCAA DII record for most consecutive dual match wins. The Huskies previously put together 54 wins from Jan. 30, 2011 to Jan. 12, 2014.
In a tough battle on Jan, 5, Western Colorado opened the dual with three consecutive wins to gain a 16-0 lead over the Huskies. At 125, #3 Patrick Allis posted a 1:07 pin against SCSU's Robby Horsman. The Mountaineers extended their lead at 133-pounds with a 14-5 major decision win by Cody Fatziner over SCSU's Brandon Betancourt. WCU's run ended at 141-pounds with a 4:35 pin by Jason Hanenberg over SCSU's Joey Bianchini.
SCSU reversed the results at 149-pounds with a 12-3 major decision victory by #2 James Pleski over WCU's Giovanni Cassioppi. At 157-pounds, #1 Jake Barzowski gave the Huskies their second win of the day with a 13-7 win over WCU's Cole Mortensen.
In action at 165-pounds, SCSU extended its win streak to three bouts with a 12-8 decision by #3 Devin FitzPatrick over WCU's Michael Thelen. The tide really started to turn at 174-pounds thanks to a 6:29 fall by SCSU's #2 Kolton Eischens over WCU's #11 James Laconte. SCSU added more bonus points at 184-pounds as #3 Tyree Overton took down another nationally ranked WCU wrestler with a 17-2 tech fall over #12 Ruger Wyneken.
The Huskies were able to ice the contest at 197-pounds with a forfeit win by #12 Noah Ryan, which made the tally SCSU 27, WCU 16. To cap the afteroon, #9 Ezayah Oropeza scored a fall at 4:26 for the Huskies over WCU's Sammy Deseriere.
St.Cloud State will continue its 2019-20 season on Jan. 10-11 with a trip to the 2020 NWCA Division II National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky.
