
St. Cloud State men's hockey to battle #5 Denver on Jan. 10-11

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-8-4, 4-6-0 NCHC) will continue its 2019-20 season with games at #5 ranked University of Denver (13-4-3, 3-3-2 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11. The games will be played at DU's Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. The game on Jan. 10 is slated to start at 8:07 p.m. and the game on Jan. 11 is schedule to drop the puck at 8:07 p.m.

TOP 20 RESULTS: SCSU is 3-3-1 in games played against top 20 ranked teams this season, which includes a 7-2 victory over Minnesota State on Dec. 28. MSU is currently #3 in the nation. SCSU has also gained wins this season over nationally ranked #11 Northeastern and #19 Northern Michigan and a 3-3 tie against NMU.

2020 FROZEN FACEOFF TICKETS: All session tickets for the 2020 NCHC Frozen Faceoff go on sale to the public on Friday, Nov. 8. The 2020 Frozen Faceoff will take place on March 20-21 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn. NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
NCHC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: SCSU freshman forward Zach Okabe posted his first four goals of his college career during the Huskies' 7-2 win over Minnesota State on Dec. 28 in game one of the Mariucci Classic. Okabe opened the game with a natural hat trick (two goals in the first period and one goal in the second period) that gave SCSU a 3-0 lead. He added his fouth goal of the game later in the second period to give SCSU a 5-0 lead. This tied an NCHC record for most goals in a game and also set a new record for the Mariucci Classic for most goals in a game. For his efforts, Okabe was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week.
TOURNAMENT NOTES: In action at the recent Mariucci Classic, which was hosted by Minnesota. The Huskies posted a 7-2 win over #3 Minnesota State and then lost a 4-1 match against Minnesota in the title game. Micah Miller scored the lone goal in the loss to UM. In the game vs. MSU, Okabe had four goals along with goals from Easton Brodzinski, Jake Wahlin and Miller. Jami Krannila had four assists in the game, which set a new tournament record for assists in a game. Jaxson Castor posted the victory over MSU with 16 saves to his credit...SCSU players named to the All-Tournament team included Okabe, Krannila and Nick Perbix.
LEADING THE WAY: Sophomore forward Sam Hentges ranks 15th among NCAA DI players with a scoring rate of 1.22 ppg. He tops SCSU's scoring charts this year with seven goal and 15 assists. He also ranked 14th among DI players with an average of 0.83 assists per game. Hentges has scored points in 15 of SCSU's 18 games this season. In two seasons with the Huskies, Hentges has 42 points (17g/25a). He is a draft pick of the Minnesota Wild.
CAREER LEADER: Jack Ahcan, a two time NCHC Defensive Player of the Week this season, now has 93 career points (18g/75a) and is fourth on the Huskies' career points by a defenseman list. SCSU's all-time leader on defense is Jimmy Schuldt, who had 118 points from 2015-19. Ahcan also ranks 17th in the team records with 75 career assists and 37th with 93 points. He ranks currently ranks 14th among NCAA DI defensemen with a scoring average of 0.83 ppg.
THE LAST TIME: The last time that SCSU scored seven goals in a game before its recent win over nationally ranked Minnesota State, was an 8-2 win at Western Michigan on March 2, 2019...the last time a Husky scored four goals in a game was the four that Joey Benik scored against Western Michigan on Nov. 14, 2015...the last time that a SCSU player posted four assists in a game before Jami Krannila had four against MSU was Jack Ahcan on Oct. 13, 2018 at Alaska.
BACK TO THE NCHC: The games at the Mariucci Classic marked the end of SCSU's regular season non-conference schedule. The remained of the regular season games will be played against NCHC team starting with the game against Denver on Jan. 10-11. The last time that SCSU played against Denver, the Huskies posted a pair of 4-3 wins on Nov. 9-10, 2018 in St. Cloud. The last time that SCSU played games in Denver, SCSU lost a pair of games by scores of 4-2 and 5-1 on Nov. 10-11, 2017.
FAMILY TREE: Jack Ahcan has played in 114 consecutive games...Easton Brodzinski also leads the Huskies this season with seven goals. His next point will be his 70th career point at SCSU. He currently has scored 37g/32a in three seasons with the Huskies. His brother Jonny Brodzinski played for the Huskies from 2012-15 and charted 64g/48a for 112 points. He currently plays for San Jose in the AHL this season. Their father Mike Brodzinski also played college hockey at SCSU from 1984-87 and scored 76g/70a, which ranks first for points by a Husky during the pre-Division I era (before 1987-88) at SCSU.
SCSU NOTES: Jaxon Castor made his first two starts as a college goalie in play against Minnesota State and Minnesota at the Mariucci Classic. He currently owns a 2.41 GAA this season...Jack Poehling, Ondrej Trejbal and Jake Wahlin lead the Huskies on the plus/minus this season at +5...Nick Poehling leads SCSU with 58 shots on goal this season and Easton Brodzinski has 52.
OPPONENT NOTES: SCSU assistant coach Mike Gibbons was an assistant coach for the Pioneers from 1990-94... SCSU is 3-1-1 in the last five games and 3-6-1 in the last 10 games played against Denver... The Huskies are 45-51-6 in the all-time series against Denver, which dates back to an 8-4 victory by the Pioneers over SCSU on Nov. 29, 1988...David Carle is the coach at Denver in 2019-20...last weekend, DU gained a sweep at home against UMASS. last year, SCSU posted a pair of 4-3 wins over Dennver at the HBNHC on Nov. 9-10, 2018...SCSU did not play at Denver in 2018-19...the last time SCSU played at Denver, the Huskies lost by scores of 4-2 and 5-1 on Nov. 10-11, 2017...Nolan Walker had 2g/2a in the Huskies' series against DU last year...SCSU is 24-28-2 in games played at Denver.
