St. Cloud State men's hockey claims 4-3 victory in season opener vs. #17 WMU

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHC) opened its 2020-21 season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over #17 Western Michigan University (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) at the NCHC Pod in Omaha, Neb. on Dec. 1. Â
The Huskies took it to the wire as they gained the game winning goal at 19:33 of the third period with a wild goal by junior blueliner Nick Perbix, who put a shot on net that was eventually deflected out of the air and into the net by one of the WMU defenders. He was assisted on the play by Micah Miller, which gave the Huskies the eventual 4-3 winning margin in the contest.
St. Cloud State broke into the game's scoring first with a goal by senior forward Kevin Fitzgerald at 2:36 of the first period, which include an assist from Perbix. WMU replied at 6:18 of the first with a goal by Brett Van Os. This was Fitzgerald's 21st career goal at SCSU and his 50th career point.
In the second period, junior forward Micah Miller helped SCSU regain the lead with a marker at 13:54, while Jamie Krannila had the solo assist on the goal, which was Miller's 11th career tally at SCSU. Miller was selected as the game's number one star, while Perbix was the number two star of the game.
WMU charged back in the second half of the period with a goal by Scooter Brickley at 18:37 and then the Broncos tooks a 3-2 lead at 19:28 of the second with a goal by Jason Polin.
In the final period, SCSU tied the contest at 13:40 of the third with a goal by Kyler Kupka. Senior captain Spencer Meier posted the assist on the goal, which was Kupka's first career goal at SCSU.
In the contest, SCSU rallied in the game to outshoot the Broncos 27-24. SCSU had no power play chances in the contest but the Huskies were a perfect 3-of-3 on the penalty kill, in a game that featured only three penalties called on the Huskies.
In the nets, David Hrenak gained the victory for SCSU with 21 saves while Austin Cain took the loss for WMU with 14 saves in 31:40 minutes of play. Brandon Bussi opened the game and allowed one goal before bowing out after 28:08 due to an injury.
SCSU will continue the NCHC pod in Omaha on Saturday, Dec. 5 with an 8:05 p.m. game against Denver. Of note, SCSU's schedule game vs. Colorado College on Dec. 3 has been postponned until further notice. Fans can listen to all games at the Omaha pod on The River 96.7 FM and KVSC 88.1 FM. Fans can watch all the games from Omaha on NCHC.tv/scsu
