WINONA, MINN. – It's a certifiable fact that the St. Cloud State women's basketball team had an impressive January. It's true. The Huskies posted a 9-0 record during the month, with all nine wins coming against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents. On Saturday, St. Cloud State got the month of February started on the right foot, as the team opened the month with a resounding 68-49 win over Winona State University, extending its win streak to 10 consecutive games since the start of January.
Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) wasted no time setting the tone for the Huskies, as she drained a three-pointer just 10 second into the game to set off a 10-0 scoring run for St. Cloud State. In fact, the Warriors wouldn't score their first bucket until the 4:54 mark, when Taylor Hustad managed to score her team's first basket and cut the Huskies lead to 10-2. Still, St. Cloud State's offensive continued to score, as the team extended its lead to 13-2 with under three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Winona State eventually figured out its offensive game plan and cut the Huskies lead to 15-8 by the end of the first quarter. From that point on, it was a juggernaut of a battle between the teams, as the two fought for defensive supremacy for the majority of the second quarter. The Huskies, though, hit their stride in the final minutes of play, as they went on a 8-0 run and held a 28-15 lead over the Warriors at the half courtesy of Tori Wortz' (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) last second three-pointer.
Winona State had no answer for St. Cloud State's offense in the third quarter, as the Huskies rushed ahead to a 43-23 lead at the 4:20 mark and entered the final 10 minutes with a 48-33 advantage. The Warriors, though, had some fight left in them, as they cut St. Cloud State's lead to a manageable nine points at 48-39 with 8:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.
That was the closest Winona State would come to catching the Huskies, as a layup-and-one by Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) regained a double-digit lead for St. Cloud State at 51-39. Though the Warriors would whittle the lead down to 10 two more times, they were never able to catch the well-rounded Huskies, as the visitors ran away with their tenth consecutive victory by a final score of 68-49.
Again, St. Cloud State's game plan was well executed against Winona State, as the team saw three student-athletes score in double-digits while four put together five-plus rebound efforts. Wortz led the way in scoring, ending her impressive weekend with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Warriors. Sophomore Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) joined the scoring party with 13 points, while Kilboten closed the day with a double-double, tallying 11 points to go along with a team-leading 12 rebounds on the night.
The Huskies defense was as spectacular as ever, as they held the red-hot Warriors to .229 percent shooting from the floor, including an abysmal .172 mark from three-point range. Additionally, St. Cloud State held the South Division's #2 team to just 15 points in the opening half, the lowest amount of points the Huskies have surrendered in an NSIC game this season.
With the win, St. Cloud Sate's overall victory improves to 16-4 and the team is now 13-3 in NSIC play. Additionally, the Huskies earn their fifth consecutive weekend sweep against the conference opponent, and, on head coach Lori Fish's birthday, give her the longest such streak of her head coaching career with St. Cloud State.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, February 7 when they host Wayne State College at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
