
St. Cloud State men's hockey to face Colorado College on Feb. 7-8

The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (10-12-4, 7-9-0 NCHC) will continue its 2019-20 season with games at Colorado College (8-5-1, 3-12-1 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8. Both games will be played at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Game time on Feb. 7 is slated for 8:37 p.m. CT/7:37 p.m. MT and the game on Feb. 8 is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. CT/6:07 p.m. MT.

SATURDAY NIGHT VIEWING: The SCSU-CC game on Saturday, Feb. 8 will be available for live viewing online at NCHC.tv/scsu (this is a PPV service).TOP 20 RESULTS: SCSU is 5-5-1 in games played against top 20 ranked teams this season, which includes a weekend sweep over Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 17-18. SCSU has also gained wins this season over nationally ranked #3 Minnesota State, #11 Northeastern and #19 Northern Michigan and a 3-3 tie against NMU.
WHERE DO WE STACK UP: The Huskies currently sit in fifth place in the NCHC standings this week with a 7-9-0 NCHC record. SCSU has 21 league points and is tied for 5th place with Omaha, which has a 6-7-3 league record and 21 NCHC points. CC is in eighth place with 10 league points and Miami is in seventh place with 12 points. North Dakota (40), Minnesota Duluth (32), Denver (28) and Western Michigan (28) round out the top four teams in the conference this week. Of note, SCSU is ranked #30 in this week's Pairwise Rankings.
LAST WEEK: The Huskies gained their second consecutive home ice sweep with 4-2 and 3-0 wins over Miami at the HBNHC on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 respectively. To open the weekend, SCSU trailed 1-0 in the second period before a goal by Zach Okabe tied it at 1-1. Miami fired back to take a 2-1 lead but a goal at 18:00 of the second period by Easton Brodzinski tied the game at 2-2. In the third, SCSU's Jack Poehling posted the GWG at 13:45 before a late ENG by Micah Miller made the final 4-2. David Hrenak made 19 saves to gain the win for SCSU. On Feb. 1, SCSU and Miami were scoreless after one for the second consecutive night, before Nick Poehling scored the power play GWG in the second period. In the final period, SCSU charted goals by Miller and Brodzinski to earn the victory. Hrenak was the shutout goalie of record with 18 saves for SCSU. SCSU hit a season game-high with 38 shots in the game, and limited the RedHawks to just 18 shots on target. Over the weekend, SCSU allowed only 37 shots in the two games combined and outshot Miami 73-37. On the penalty kill, SCSU was 3-3 vs. Miami in the two games combined.
RECORD SETTER: Junior goalie David Hrenak scored his team record ninth career shutout in the 3-0 win over Miami on Feb. 1. Hrenak made 18 saves in the contest and is now tied for the team's career shutout lead along with Scott Meyer, who had nine shutouts from 1996-01. On the season, Hrenak improved to 9-8-4 with a 2.81 GAA and a .901 save percentage. In his career with the Huskies, Hrenak has a 46-20-8 record with a 2.35 GAA and a .908 save percentage in 4579:13 minutes of play. He is a draft pick of the LA Kings.THREE MORE NEEDED: Jack Ahcan, a two time NCHC Defensive Player of the Week this season, now has 97 career points (19g/78a) and is fourth on the Huskies' career points by a defenseman list. SCSU's all-time leader on defense is Jimmy Schuldt, who had 118 points from 2015-19. Ahcan also ranks 16th in the team records with 78 career assists and 36th with 97 points. Ahcan is on the verge of joining SCSU's 100 point club and would become the 34th place (all games played at the DI level) to join the 100 point club. Last year's 100-point club entries were Jimmy Schuldt, Robby Jackson and Patrick Newell. Ahcan added his fifth goal of the season on Jan. 24 vs. WMU. He currently ranks 2nd on the team this winter with 19 points and 14 assists.
40 WINS: SCSU head coach Brett Larson won his 40th career game on Feb. 1. In just two seasons with the Huskies, Larson has posted a 40-18-7 career record as a collegiate coach. At 65 games, Larson is the fastest coach at SCSU to hit 40 career wins during the DI era. Previous coach Bob Motzko hit 40 wins in 69 games to start his tenure with the Huskies.
VERY INTERESTING: Here are some interesting facts to consider for the 2019-20 Huskies...SCSU is 8-0-2 if they have a lead after two periods of play...SCSU is 4-1-1 if they lead after the first period of play...SCSU is 5-2-3 if they have 30+ shots in a game...SCSU is 4-5-2 this season when it scores on the power play, but 6-8-2 when the Huskies don't score on the power play...SCSU is 5-1-0 when Micah Miller scores a goal this season.
GOAL LEADER: Junior forward Easton Brodzinski had two goals vs. Miami and continues to lead SCSU with 11 goals this season. He is the team's leading active goal scorer with 41 goals posted for the Huskies in 103 games played, and he scored his 40th career goal on Jan. 31 vs. Miami. Brodzinski also has 34 assists during his collegiate career. He is one of just 37 SCSU players at the DI level to score 40+ goals in his career.
ON DECK: SCSU will enjoy a bye week on Feb. 14-15 before hosting NCHC rival North Dakota on Feb. 21-22 at the HBNHC. SCSU finishes its NCHC schedule vs. #1 UND, #7 Denver and #6 Minnesota Duluth.
OPPONENT NOTES: Head coach Mike Haviland was an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2008-12...SCSU assistant coach Mike Gibbons was an assistant coach at Colorado College from 1988 to 1990...last year, SCSU gained a 5-3 and 2-1 victory at CC on Nov. 2-3, 2018 and a 2-2 tie and a 5-4 OT win on Feb. 8--9, 2019 in St. Cloud. NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
