
Brinkman, Doherty earn NCAA Qualifying marks in diving dual with SDSU

ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University swims and dive teams continued to show their dominance on the boards in a Sunday afternoon diving dual with South Dakota State University. The Huskies won three of four diving events while seniors Madison Brinkman (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Melrose) and Alyssa Doherty (Cudahy, Wis. / Whitnall) earned NCAA qualifying marks Sunday afternoon.
Brinkman, Doherty and freshman Lucas Hammontree (Cambridge, Minn. / Cambridge-Isanti) won individual events for St. Cloud State, while other Huskies put together strong performances on the 1 and 3-meter boards. In the women's 1-meter competition, Brinkman continued to dominate, as she won the event with an NCAA qualifying score of 271.75. The score allows Brinkman to qualify for the preliminary qualifier for the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season, as she earned qualifying marks in 2018, 2019 and 2020.Â
Doherty also won an individual event and earned an NCAA qualifying score, as she took home the gold in the 3-meter competition thanks to her score of 271.20. Like Brinkman, Doherty is a multi-year NCAA qualifier, as she earned qualifying marks in both 2019 and 2020.Â
Meredith Matchinsky (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) and Taylor Terfher also competed for the Huskies Sunday afternoon. Matchinsky took third in the 1-meter competition thanks to a score of 242.20, while Terfher finished in sixth with a score of 223.65. Matchinsky additionally competed in the 3-meter competition, finishing in second place with a score of 262.80.
The final St. Cloud State diver to win an individual event Sunday was none other than Hammontree, who finished first in the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 250.45. However, he wasn't the only male Husky to find success on the diving board Sunday evening. Evan Infante (Kenosha, Wis. / Indian Trails) recorded top-5 performances on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, taking second on the 1-meter with a score of 234.80 and fourth on 3-meter with a score of 213.20.Â
Isaac Roush (Middleton, Wis. / Middleton) and Dylan Von Baragan (Kansas City, Mo. / Staley) also competed for St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon, making their collegiate debuts on the 1 and 3-meter boards. Roush finished fifth in the 1-meter competition and sixth in 3-meter thanks to scores of 220.30 and 196.50 respectively, while Von Baragan finished sixth and seventh with scores of 129.50 (1-meter) and 140.55 (3-meter).
The men's finishes will carry over to Monday afternoon's dual swim meet against South Dakota State, which will begin promptly at 1 p.m. The women will resume competition on Thursday, January 21 when they host Minnesota State-Mankato at a yet to be announced time.Â
