
Hendriks breaks record as Huskies defeat South Dakota State

ST. CLOUD, MINN. - Raf Hendricks (Berg En Terblijt, Netherlands / Stella Maris College) could not have asked for a better debut with the St. Cloud State University men's swim and dive team. The freshman not only won three events as an individual, he also broke a school record and helped the Huskies defeat South Dakota State University in Monday's dual meet.
Hendricks outstanding day was highlighted by his school record-breaking performance in the 200 backstroke where he won the race with an impressive time of 1:49.34. The time broke Bob Simpson's long standing record of 1:49.82, which he set back in 2013, and earned nine points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score. Hendricks also won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.35 and the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 50.42.
Several other Huskies won individual events, including David Clossey (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka), who won both distance freestyle races Monday afternoon. The senior won the 1000 yard freestyle race with a time of 10:16.08 and followed that up by winning the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.38.
Abe Townley (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) also had an extremely successful day, as he won multiple races as both an individual and member of relay teams. Townley anchored the Huskies 200 and 400 medley relay teams, helping them win with times of 1:34.13 and 3:31.59 respectively. Additionally, he swam the opening legs of the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays, guiding St. Cloud State to victory with times of 1:25.67 and 3:09.74. Finally Townley won his own individual events, as he dominated the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.27.
Andres Santiago Hernandez (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North), Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kansas) and Jayden Porter (Bismarck, N.D. / Century) were the final three Huskies to win events Monday afternoon and earn nine points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score. Santiago Hernandez won the 200 yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:00.05, while Alleven won the 100 yard butterfly thanks to a time of 53.75. Porter impressed in his first meet of 2021 as well, as he won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.46.
Thanks to these and several other performances, including Sunday's diving meet, the Huskies defeated the Jackrabbits by scores of 108-97 and 128.5-75.5. St. Cloud State's men's swim and dive team will return to action on Saturday, January 23 when it hosts the University of South Dakota at the Halenbeck Hall Aquatic Center.
