BURNSVILLE, MINN. - Outstanding. It's a word several people have used to describe St. Cloud State University senior Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy). The fifth year senior has made a lasting impression on her coaches, teammates and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents as she was named First Team All-Conference Thursday morning. Torve will need to make more room in her trophy case, as she was voted the recipient of the NSIC's inaugural Outstanding Senior of the Year Award for the sport of volleyball.
"We are extremely proud of Maddy and everything she has accomplished in her St. Cloud State career," said St. Cloud State head volleyball coach Chad Braegelmann. "Maddy is unbelievably generous with her time. She is a responsible young woman that has been an impactful leader to a program that finished 1-19 in NSIC play in 2014 and is currently No. 1 in the NSIC with two matches remaining."
The NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year Award is presented to an NSIC volleyball student-athlete who has played with their team for four seasons, is academically superior and makes positive contributions to both their team and the University. The award was initiated for all conference-sponsored sports in 2021 as a way to exemplify senior student-athletes who demonstrate the attributes of a model NSIC athlete. Torve certainly fits the bill. On the court, the fifth year setter is a two-time All-Conference honoree, having earned First Team honors as a senior in 2021 after being voted Second Team All-NSIC in 2019. As a senior, she became the first setter in over a decade to eclipse 3000 career assists and currently ranks third all-time with 3995. Additionally, Torve is just the third setter in program history to record 1000+ assists in back-to-back seasons and was named the NSIC Setter of the Week four times in 2021.Â
Torve's resume off the court is equally impressive. A three-time Academic All-Conference honoree, Torve is a marketing major who has maintained a 3.94 GPA throughout her St. Cloud State career. In 2020, she was a NSIC Myles Brand Award Winner and has been awarded the May Bowle Art Scholarship, Presidential Academic Scholarship and the Huskies Scholar Fund while with the Huskies. She is also extremely active in the community, volunteering at Westwood community church and coaching several youth volleyball teams.Â
Torve was also instrumental in the turnaround of St. Cloud State volleyball. When she joined the team as a freshman in 2017, the Huskies had won just 47 NSIC matches in the previous 12 seasons and finished toward the bottom of the conference standings. In the last four seasons, Torve has guided St. Cloud State to 48 NSIC wins and its first NSIC regular season title since 1982. As a first year, Torve led the Huskies to their first win over a top-25 opponent in 100 matches, and the team has now defeated 19 AVCA top-25 teams in the last two seasons.Â
