
Huskies hang on for 79-70 win over Mary

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The pirate's life might be right for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. The Huskies improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play Friday evening, as they nabbed a 79-70 win over the University of Mary. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) led St. Cloud State's scoring efforts, as the fifth year senior scored a season-high 25 points on 9-14 shooting.

It was a higher scoring first quarter than Huskies fans are used to, as St. Cloud State and Mary scored a combined 27 points in the first 10 minutes of play. Thanks to strong three-point shooting from Bridget Froehlke (Wrightstown, Wis. / Wrightstown), the Huskies held the 15-12 advantage after the first quarter and extended their lead to 22-15 early in the second quarter. The Marauders were able to keep pace with St. Cloud State, though the Huskies held a 33-26 advantage at halftime.
St. Cloud State continued to score in the third quarter, jumping to a 57-45 lead on strong three-point shooting, this time by Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson), Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) and Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany). Still, Mary would simply not go away, cutting the Huskies lead to 72-63 with 1:11 remaining in the ball game. St. Cloud State drained seven of nine free throw attempts in the closing seconds, securing a 79-70 win on back-to-back free throws from Evans.
TOP HUSKIES
- Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) was unstoppable from everywhere on the court, as she scored a season-high 25 points on 9-14 shooting, including a 3-7 mark from three-point range. The fifth year senior also added three rebounds, three assists and two steals to her stat line Friday evening.
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) closed the game with 16 points while shooting 7-8 from the free throw line with four assists, while Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) closed the night with 13 points and four steals.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will close the weekend on Saturday, when the team hosts Minot State at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
