
Huskies close weekend with 71-50 win over Minot State

Defense holds visitors to .345 shooting, including .235 from three
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is just finding ways to win. The Huskies improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play with a 71-50 win over Minot State. It marks the seventh consecutive win for St. Cloud State since its season opening loss to #4 Fort Hays State, and the first perfect start in conference play for the Huskies since the 2015-16 season.
ALL PLUGGED UP
Defense was once again on display in Halenbeck Hall, as the Huskies continued to dominate that particular aspect of the game. St. Cloud State forced multiple Minot State turnovers early in the competition, allowing the Huskies to take an early 6-0 lead just two minutes into the game. However, St. Cloud State was forced to play without Friday's leading scorer Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) for chunks of the first half, as the fifth year senior was called for two quick fouls against the visitors. The Huskies, though, found other ways to score, and led Minot State 33-25 at the half.
St. Cloud State's tenacious defense continued to be on display in the second half, as the Huskies ran out to a 53-34 lead in the third quarter. Evans and Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) continued to pace St. Cloud State's offense, as they eclipsed double-digit points around the three minute mark. From there, it was all smooth sailing for the Huskies, as they defeated the visiting team by final score of 71-50.
TOP HUSKIES
- In total, 11 student-athletes scored for St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon, led by Nikki Kilboten's (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) 14 point effort. The fifth year senior additionally pulled down seven rebounds and recorded two blocks in the victory.
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) and Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) also scored in double-digit points for St. Cloud State, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively. Evans additionally led the team in rebounds, tying her career high with eight.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will hit the road for its next NSIC series, as the Huskies take on MSU-Moorhead and Northern State to close the 2021 portion of the schedule. Tip off for Friday's game against the Dragons is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's game is slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
