ST. CLOUD, MINN. - In case you haven't heard, the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is on a bit of a hot streak. The Huskies have won seven consecutive games and are one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). This weekend, St. Cloud State will put its win streak on the line as the team travels to MSU-Moorhead and Northern State for one final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) series before the holiday break.Â
The Huskies will face the Dragons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Moorhead, Minnesota before heading due west to face the Wolves at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. It will be a true road test for St. Cloud State, which has yet to play a two-game NSIC series on the road this season. In fact, the Huskies last road game occurred on December 2, when they defeated Minnesota-Crookston 60-41 in Crookston, Minnesota.Â
Live stats and video will be available for both contests this weekend, and there will be a live radio broadcast on both the Varsity Network App and KVSC Sports Stream. Score updates will be made to the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB) when possible.Â
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC showdown:
9-16 - The records may not indicate it, but this weekend will be a true test for the Huskies, as they are just 9-16 in the last 25 road games against MSU-Moorhead and Northern State. St. Cloud State is 5-7 in the last 12 meetings in Moorhead and 4-9 in the last 13 games in Aberdeen. However, the Huskies enter Friday's contest riding a two-game win streak against the Dragons and split in their series with the Wolves in 2020-21.Â
60.6/67.2 - Once a perennial power in the NSIC, MSU-Moorhead enters Friday's contest with a 3-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in conference play. Part of this may be due to the Dragons scoring struggles. While MSU-Moorhead is holding opponents to 67.2 points per game, the Dragons aren't putting up big numbers on the scoreboard, as they average just 60.6 points per game.Â
69.0/67.3 - Northern State has the opposite problem. The Wolves score an average of 69.0 points per game while holding opponents to 67.3. It's one of the main reasons Northern State sits in third in the NSIC North Division standings with a 3-2 conference record. In fact, after dropping their season opener, the Wolves won four consecutive games before falling to Michigan Tech and Minot State in back-to-back games earlier this month. Northern State also splits most recent NSIC series, defeating Minnesota-Crookston 64-47 before falling to Bemidji State 66-50.Â
3 - Three players have been key for St. Cloud State's scoring efforts this season. Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) has been the catalyst of the Huskies offense, as she leads the team in points (104) and assists (25) headed into the weekend. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) is right on her heels, as the fifth year senior has scored 103 points and tallied 21 assists in the first eight games of the season. Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) is also averaging in double-digits thanks to her 96 points through eight games. She also leads the team in rebounds with 58 total to average 7.3 a game.Â
75.0 - St. Cloud State's defense receives a lot of attention, and rightfully so. The Huskies are holding opponents to an average of 52.2 points per game, the lowest average in the NSIC this season. However, St. Cloud State's offense has flown under the radar, especially last weekend when the Huskies averaged 75.0 points per game against Mary and Minot State. St. Cloud State eclipsed 70 points in both games, defeating the Marauders 79-70 before taking down the Beavers 71-50 on Saturday.
