BAY CITY, MICH. - The St. Cloud State University men's soccer team has a home. As the Huskies first official season as a Division II program quickly approaches in Fall 2021, the team solidified their conference membership for their inaugural season as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced St. Cloud State's acceptance Tuesday morning.
"The GLIAC Is extremely excited to welcome St. Cloud State men's soccer program and Augustana men's swimming and diving program," conference commissioner Kris Dunbar said in a recent statement regarding the addition. "Both institutions have a long history of athletic success, and we are thrilled they have chosen to introduce two programs that will provide more opportunities for student-athletes while strengthening the competition of the GLIAC."
St. Cloud State men's soccer will join the GLIAC as an affiliate member in the 2021-22 academic year, while most of the remaining Division II sports will compete as full members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The team will be the second in the athletics department to compete within the GLIAC, as the men's swim and dive team is also an affiliate member of the conference.
St. Cloud State was originally scheduled to compete as an independent in the fall of 2020 until the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled what should have been the team's inaugural season. The Huskies were not only able to shore up its roster and further develop with the extra time, but find a conference to call home.
The GLIAC is home to 12 total institutions, six of which sponsor men's soccer. Additionally, the lone other school within the NSIC to sponsor men's soccer, Upper Iowa, is an affiliate member of the conference, making a natural fit for the burgeoning St. Cloud State program.
"We are so excited and grateful for this opportunity to join the GLIAC for the fall season," commented head men's soccer coach Sean Holmes. "Our intention is to grow collegiate soccer in the state of Minnesota and expand the NCAA Division II footprint. This opportunity is a great way to grow both our program and the game in an outstanding and competitive conference."
The final schedule for the Huskies upcoming fall season has not yet been released. Please stay tuned to the official website, scsuhuskies.com, for the most up to date information.
