Huskies fall 1-0 to Panthers
Grand Rapids, MI. – St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (4-12-1, 2-10-0 GLIAC) season came to a close Sunday afternoon as they were defeated 1-0 against Davenport. The Huskies were unable to reach the GLIAC Tournament as they needed a win to put them in position for the final spot.
Knowing the magnitude of this game, the Huskies came out aggressive early. They generated two corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes which resulted in two shots on goal, one from Alex Tiedt and the other from Owen Worsdell. Davenport pushed the ball into the Huskies box, but the backline defense held strong to prevent a goal. The Panthers ultimately cracked through the Huskies defense in the 21st minute as Charlie Davis dribbled deep into the box and scored for Davenport. With their new found momentum, the Panthers nearly scored again as Ramy Atia made a diving save to his right. DU followed through on the rebound for what appeared to be a goal, but was ruled offsides. St. Cloud State had one last push in the half that resulted in a great scoring chance for Yuken Harmon, but his shot would be saved by Beau Hudd of the Panthers in the 44th minute. SCSU went into the break down 1-0.
Moving into the second half, the Huskies continued to apply pressure on the Davenport defense. Andrés García compiled multiple scoring chances in the half with a shot high of the goal and then a near header goal that would be saved by Hudd. In the 52nd minute, Davenport nearly scored off a rebound again as Atia came away with a save. Off the rebound, the Panthers hit the post as the game remained 1-0. St. Cloud State had a continuous offensive attack throughout the course of the game with six corner kicks and eight shots on goal, but could never find the equalizing goal. The Huskies would be defeated 1-0 in what would ultimately be their final game of the year.
