SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY - St. Cloud State University men's hockey recruit Jack Peart isn't even on campus yet, and he is already making plenty of news. The Grand Rapids, Minnesota native once again made headlines Saturday afternoon, as Peart was selected in the second round of the 2021 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft.
Peart was drafted by the Minnesota Wild as the 54th pick in the draft, becoming the 68th Husky selected since the inauguration of the NHL Draft in 1986. A 5'11 defenseman, Peart is slated to join St. Cloud State in the fall of 2021 after a season to remember in 2020-21. He won a slew of awards, including Minnesota's prestigious Mr. Hockey Award, which is annually given to the top high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota. That wasn't the only award Peart achieved in his final season of high school and prep hockey, as he was named the USHL's Rookie of the Year after a breakout year with the Fargo Force in which he tallied 15 points in 24 games during the regular season and seven points, including two goals, in nine playoff games.
Peart joins four other Huskies on the active roster who are NHL draft picks, including fellow Wild draft pick Sam Hentges (New Brighton, Minn. / Tri-City. Sophomore Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland / Kiekko-Espoo U20 / Toronto) and seniors Nick Perbix (Elk River, Minn. / Omaha / Tampa Bay) and David Hrenak (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia / Green Bay / LA Kings) are also draft picks on St. Cloud State's roster. In total, 30 Huskies have gone on to play NHL games since the 1930s and 68 former St. Cloud State student-athletes have been drafted.
