ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team should consider changing its name to the road warriors. The Huskies continue their four-game road trip this weekend, traveling to Wayne, Nebraska and Sioux Falls, South Dakota to take on Wayne State and Augustana this upcoming Friday and Saturday.Â
St. Cloud State's schedule will look a little different this weekend. For the first half of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) seasons, the women's teams held the primetime slots, playing at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and 5:30 p.m. Saturdays. That is set to change this weekend, which happens to be the midpoint of the 2021-22 conference schedule. The Huskies, and all women's basketball teams in the NSIC, will now play at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, while the men play in the later time slots.Â
This means St. Cloud State will face Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Augustana at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the NSIC Network and Varsity Network App, and live stats will also be available. Additionally, score updates will be made to the team's official Twitter account (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB) when possible.Â
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC series:
3 - The Huskies have lost just three games this season, soaring to an impressive 12-3 record with a 10-2 mark in NSIC play. However, all three of St. Cloud State's losses have come on the road and on Fridays. The Huskies lost their season opener to #4 Fort Hays State on Friday, November 19, dropped their first conference game at MSU-Moorhead on Friday, December 17, and fell to Upper Iowa this past Friday, January 14.Â
48.0/58.7 - An interesting trend occurred in all three of St. Cloud State's losses this season. While the Huskies defense never faltered, holding opponents to just 58.7 points in those games, their offense struggled, as they averaged just 48.0 points in their losses to Fort Hays, MSU-Moorhead and Upper Iowa. In fact, in the loss to the Peacocks last weekend, St. Cloud State shot just .349 from the floor, including a .160 mark from three-point range, a season-low for the team.Â
6/7 - The Huskies have found plenty of success against both the Wildcats and Vikings in recent history. Dating back to the 2018-19 season, St. Cloud State is a combined 6-1 against the two teams, including games in the NSIC Tournament. The Huskies additionally made history against Wayne State and Augustana back in 2018-19, defeating both teams in their own buildings for the first time in 10+ seasons. That year, St. Cloud State defeated the Wildcats 78-67 in Wayne, Nebraska before taking down Augustana 63-48 on Saturday, February 9.Â
71.3 - The Huskies defense will once again have its hands full on Saturday, as they face another top-3 offense in the NSIC. The Vikings are currently averaging 71.3 points per game against conference opponents this season, which ranks second in the NSIC behind Minnesota State. Wayne State, on the other hand, averages 65.8 points per game and lost its top scorer, reigning NSIC South Division Player of the Year Erin Norling, to the University of St. Thomas over the summer.
21.5 - The Wildcats may have lost Norling, but Kylie Hammer has quickly taken her place as the top scorer in the NSIC. Hammer is averaging a league-leading 21.5 points per game in conference contests this season while shooting .459 from the floor. She has led Wayne State in scoring in 10 of the team's 15 games this season and is one of just two players averaging over 10.0 points this season.Â
