Fitzgerald earns nominee for second straight season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey graduate forward Kevin Fitzgerald (Hinsdale, Ill.) was named a nominee for the Hockey Humanitarian Award for the second straight season, as announced on Monday by the organization. The award, which is celebrating its 27th season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen – a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism. He is one of three student-athletes to be named as a repeat nominee, one of three from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and one of 11 nominees overall.
Finalists for the 2022 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2022 recipient will be honored on Friday, April 8 during the NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Boston, Mass.
After bouncing around the ranks of junior hockey for four seasons, Fitzgerald joined the St. Cloud State program as a walk-on ahead of the 2017-18 season. He played in 38 games in his freshman campaign with the Huskies, tallying 19 points (five goals / 14 assists) while producing a +7 mark. Fitzgerald earned a scholarship following his sophomore season (2018-19) where he helped the Huskies earn a Penrose Cup championship and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament following a 30-6-3 mark. In that season, he scored 18 points (10 goals / eight assists) with a +13 mark and one game-winning goal.
Fitzgerald was named an alternate captain ahead of the 2020-21 season, where he helped the Huskies produce a historic run to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division I men's ice hockey national championship game. Fitzgerald scored 18 points (nine goals / nine assists) and was +2 on the season.
Just 20 games into his fifth season, Fitzgerald has had a career year in 2021-22, scoring 25 points (11 goals / 14 assists) with a +14 mark and five power play goals. Each of those marks is a career-best for the Hinsdale, Ill., native.
Fitzgerald's resume off the ice is equally impressive. He graduated with a degree in Accounting with a 3.49 GPA in May 2021 and is currently pursuing his Master's of Business Administration, scheduled to graduate in December 2022. He is a four-time Academic All-NCHC selection and is currently enrolled in the St. Cloud State honors program. He is a three-time recipient of St. Cloud State's Herberger Business School Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship and earned the Elloyd A. Hauser Scholarship for the Herberger School of Business. During the summer of 2020, Fitzgerald interned with KPMG, an accounting firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and accepted a full-time position as an Audit Associate which he was scheduled to start in the fall of 2021 before he chose to return for one more season in St. Cloud. Additionally, in his spare time, Fitzgerald volunteers with the Minnesota Wild Special Hockey Team, St. Cloud Frostbite Special Olympics floor hockey program and has participated in several Huskies outreach community programs, including the Polar Plunge, Skate with the Huskies, and Huskies Haulers.
In the 2020-21 season, Fitzgerald was nominated for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, the Senior CLASS Award and earned the NCHC Sportsmanship Award.
