Larson will make his Olympic debut in Beijing with Team USA
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey head coach Brett Larson has been named an assistant coach for the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, announced Thursday by USA Hockey. Larson will join Team USA for his Olympic debut for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China from Feb. 2-20.
Larson is the third St. Cloud State Coach to join the bench for Team USA, joining Herb Brooks (Head Coach – 1980 Lake Placid, Head Coach – 2002 Salt Lake City) and John Harrington (Assistant Coach – 1984 Sarajevo). He is the first to do so while currently coaching the Huskies, as Brooks was head coach of the Huskies for the 1986-87 season, while Harrington was an associate head coach from 1990-93.
It will be Larson's third time on the bench for Team USA after serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Junior Team in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship and the head coach for the U.S. Junior Select Team that won the 2012 World Junior A Challenge.
"It is a huge honor, and I am extremely proud to represent our country in China," said Larson. "It's a dream come true to represent the United States at the Olympic Games, and I look forward to the opportunity to help our team win gold."
Larson is in his fourth year on the bench for St. Cloud State, where he has led the Huskies to a 75-38-9 record with two NCAA Tournament appearances in his first three seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2020-21. The Huskies are currently ranked fourth nationally with a record of 12-6-0 and four wins over ranked teams through 18 games. In 2020-21, he guided the Huskies to a 20-11-0 record, a runner-up finish in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff and an at-large bid the NCAA Northeast Regional. In the national tournament, the Huskies advanced to the Frozen Four for just the second time in program history and finished as the runner-up in its first-ever trip to the Division I National Championship game. In his first season as head coach of the Huskies, Larson was named the 2018-19 NCHC Coach of the year after leading St. Cloud State to a 30-6-3 record and a Penrose Cup.
Prior to St. Cloud State, Larson served as assistant coach at his alma mater, Minnesota Duluth, for two stints (2008-11 and 2015-18) where he helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament five times and the Frozen Four three times, including national championships in 2011 and 2018. He also served as the head coach and general manager for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers from 2011-13 and as an assistant coach at Ohio State from 2013-15.
A Duluth, Minn., native, Larson played four seasons at Minnesota Duluth (1991-95) where he captained the Bulldogs during his senior season and was a three-time WCHA All-Academic team award recipient. He was an 11th round pick of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings in 1990 and played 12 years of professional hockey, including two (1999-2001) as a player-coach with the San Diego Gulls of the West Coast Hockey League.
