Hentges inks entry-level deal starting with 2022-23 season
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey senior forward Sam Hentges (New Brighton, Minn.) signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Wild (NHL), the organization announced on Tuesday. Hentges inked a two-year, entry-level contract starting with the 2022-23 season. The Totino Grace High School product was selected by the Wild in the seventh round (210th overall) in the 2018 NHL Early Entry Draft.
Hentges most recently finished his senior campaign with the Huskies, as he tallied 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) with six power play goals, three game-winning goals and a +8 rating on the ice in 20 games. Despite playing in just over half of St. Cloud State's games this season, he ranked first in game-winning goals (three), second in power play goals (six), third in goals (12) and eighth in points (22). He scored two goals twice during the season, and had nine multi-point games.
The senior forward was one of two Huskies to represent Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this past February. Hentges wore the red, white and blue for two contests in China and scored a goal in the quarterfinals off a pass from teammate Nick Perbix. The goal gave the Americans a 2-1 lead before Slovakia scored late in regulation to force overtime.
Hentges closes his St. Cloud State career with 83 career points, recording 37 goals and 46 assists in 114 games. He also posted 11 power play goals, eight game-winning goals and a +13 mark on the ice. He contributed immediately upon arriving in St. Cloud, as he recorded 20 points (10g/10a) and a +14 mark in his freshman campaign (2018-19). In just his sixth collegiate game, Hentges recorded the 62nd hat trick in program history in a 7-0 win over Boston College on Oct. 25, 2018. The New Brighton, Minn., native followed up his debut performance with a career-high 24-point season in 2019-20, as he scored seven goals and had 10 assists.
In his career, Hentges earned two NCHC weekly honors, one monthly honor and was Academic All-Conference four times.
