
St. Cloud State Women's Basketball Brings Down Upper Iowa 64-57

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's basketball team closed the weekend with a sweep after defeating the Upper Iowa Peacocks 64-57 Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall. Three Huskies scored in the double-digits and Katrina Theis put up an impressive 31 points.
GAME SUMMARY
It took St. Cloud a few minutes to get things rolling as Upper Iowa opened the game 6-0 over the Huskies. The Huskies would take a 8-6 lead after a three-point jump shot by Makenna Vanzant at 4:07. St. Cloud would close the first period up 13-8 over UIU. During the second period, Upper Iowa would get their momentum back as they outscored the Huskies 21-15 to make it a one point game at half. SCSU went into the locker down 29-28. Katrina Theis put up 12 points while Vanzant put up 10. Tori Peschel matched her first half rebounding from a week ago nabbing ten rebounds.
Less than a minute into the third period, Theis executed on a turnover in the paint to hit a layup to put the Huskies back on top 30-29. Upper Iowa would go the next six minutes without scoring any points as the Huskies continued to climb the scoreboard. A layup by Theis with an assist from T. Peschel would put the Huskies up 44-36 at the end of the third. St. Cloud's defense held UIU to just a .182 shooting percentage in the third. In the fourth, the Huskies would hold a 14-point lead over the Peacocks with 4:36 left in the game until Upper Iowa found some momentum to rally a comeback. UIU would cut their point deficit to just two with 32 seconds left. St. Cloud buckled down and Upper Iowa was forced to foul to stop the clock. The Huskies executed on their free throws to secure a 64-57 victory. St. Cloud would hold Upper Iowa to a .300 shooting percentage from the field for the second half of the game.

The Huskies are on the road next weekend as they will travel to Southwest Minnesota State Jan. 20 and Sioux Falls Jan. 21. Those games are set for 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

- Once again Katrina Theis put up big numbers. Theis led with 31 points going 11-18 from the field and 9-10 from the foul line and just shy of double-double with nine rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and two steals.
