St. Cloud State Women's Basketball Shuts Out SMSU in OT, Theis Scores 1,000th Career Point

Huskies take down Mustangs 70-59 in OT, Theis is 35th Husky to score 1,000 career points
MARSHALL, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's basketball fifth-year senior forward Katrina Theis hit a career milestone and entered the Huskies record book Friday evening. Theis put up her 1,000-career point in the Huskies 70-59 overtime victory against Southwest Minnesota State making her the 35th Husky to earn the 1,000-point milestone. This the first time St. Cloud State has played an overtime game since the 2020-21 season. The Huskies shutout the Mustangs 11-0 in the extra five minutes of play.
GAME SUMMARY
St. Cloud opened up the game with a 10-2 run over the Mustangs to put them up at the 5:56 mark of the first thanks to a layup by Abigail Groeneweg. SMSU would then outscore the Huskies 13-6 to end the first half with the Huskies holding a one-point lead of 16-15. The Mustangs would hit a three to open up the second putting them on top 18-16. A steal by Makenna Vazant would lead to a fast break layup where she put the Huskies back on top 19-18 at the 7:42 mark of the second. With just under three minutes left of the first half, Ashley Sawicki would get fouled and sent to the line for two. She sank both shots to put the Huskies up 32-24. With less than one second left, Katrina Theis put up a layup that after review was deemed good to close out the half with the Huskies leading 36-27 over the Mustangs.
Back on the court for the third, the Mustang would go on a 14-0 run to take over the lead, 41-36, with 5:16 left in the third. From there it was a slow go for St. Cloud as they only took over the lead twice by one point despite out scoring SMSU 10-7 for the remaining minutes of the third. SMSU led 48-46 going into the fourth. The 8:40 mark of the fourth marked a special moment as Katrina Theis drove into the lane for a layup to hit her 1,000 and 1,001 career points which put the Huskies back on top 50-48. A few minutes later, Tori Peschel put the Huskies up six, 55-49, with 5:26 left in the game. The Mustangs would halt the Huskies as they went on a 7-0 run to put them on top 57-56 over SCSU with 3:26 left. Theis would hit a key layup to put the Huskies back on top, 59-57, with 1:55 left. A turnover by St. Cloud gave the Mustangs the opportunity to tie the game up at 59 with 45 seconds left. Neither team was able to make a play as the clock ran out sending the game into overtime.
Overtime belonged to the Huskies as Kelsey Peschel sank a beautiful jumper from the three-point line just 16 seconds in to put the Huskies back on top 62-59. From there, it was nothing by the Huskies as they shut out the Mustangs going 11-0 in the five-minute overtime to bring home a 70-59 victory.

The Huskies are back in action tomorrow to take on Sioux Falls. The game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
