Ingram scores unassisted goal, Basse records 33-save shutout in first victory of 2023-24 season
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – No. 8/7 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) utilized an unassisted goal from sophomore forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) and 33-save shutout from senior goalie Dominic Basse (Alexandria, Va.) to rebound from a season-opening loss and defeat St. Thomas (1-1-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) on Sunday afternoon. Both teams had goals overturned due to offsides calls in the third period, as Ingram's second period score was enough to get the Husky win.
TURNING POINT
About halfway through the second period, Ingram created a Tommie turnover in the neutral zone when he was able to get his stick on an attempted pass. The puck deflected off the boards and up to the Huskies attacking zone, where Ingram was all alone. The Husky sophomore moved from left to right and went forehand, backhand then through the five-hole for the lone score in the game.
In the third period, both teams had goals taken off the scoreboard after nearly identical plays that ended up getting called offsides. First, fifth-year forward Kyler Kupka (Camrose, Alberta) potted a one-timer to the back of the net five minutes into the period, but junior defenseman Jack Peart (Grand Rapids, Minn.) had the puck come off the blue line and back into the neutral zone, causing the offside overturn. Later in the period, St. Thomas seemed to equalize the score with just over three minutes left in the game, but a Tommie defenseman let the puck get above the blue line, causing the referee crew to overcall a second goal in the final period.
St. Thomas pulled its goalie soon after and had a few scoring chances in the game's final minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net, resulting in the SCSU win.
