Veeti Miettinen, Mason Salquist and Verner Miettinen score in NCHC opener
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (3-4-0, 1-0-0 NCHC) earned a 3-2 victory over Miami (4-2-1, 0-1-0 NCHC) to open conference play on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Both Miettinen brothers – senior forward Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) and freshman forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) found the back of the net in the victory, as the younger Husky recorded his first collegiate goal with his third period game-winning score.
The Huskies found the scoreboard early in the first period, netting a goal just 3:16 into the game after junior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) scored off a great set play from fifth-year forward Kyler Kupka (Camrose, Alberta) and senior forward Joe Molenaar (Minnetonka, Minn.), who recorded assists.
The RedHawks knotted the score at 1-1 late in the second period, but the Huskies would respond quickly, as Veeti Miettinen launched a shot from the high slot for a score and a 2-1 lead. Verner Miettinen would then extend the lead late in the third period, as he netted a shot near the goal line on the power play for his first collegiate score. A late extra-attacker goal from Miami would make the younger Miettinen's goal the game-winning score.
