Salquist’s shorthanded goal tied the game in third period, Miller’s 10th round goal gives Huskies extra point
ST CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 5 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Huskies (18-8-1, 10-6-1 NCHC) and Miami RedHawks (7-17-3, 2-13-2 NCHC) played an even extremely even game on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, resulting in a 3-3 tie. After a 10-round marathon shootout, senior forward Micah Miller (Grand Rapids, Minn.) found the back of the net to give the Huskies a shootout victory and the extra point in the conference standings.
Both teams played even throughout the game, with both teams scoring one goal each period and neither team leading by more than one goal. The shots on goal were close as well, with St. Cloud State narrowly leading at 33-30.
TURNING POINT
Miami scored in a 4-on-4 situation early in the third period to grab a 3-2 lead, its second lead of the game, leaving the Huskies chasing for much of the final period. The situation appeared to turn dire at the 12:19 mark of the period, as senior forward Kyler Kupka (Camrose, Alberta) was sent to the penalty box after an interference penalty.
Momentum changed during the penalty kill however, as senior forward Jami Krannila (Nokia, Finland) and sophomore forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) connected during a breakaway to tie game for the Huskies, 3-3. The Huskies seventh shorthanded goal of the season pushed the game to overtime and eventually a shootout.
In the shootout, junior goalie Dominic Basse (Alexandria, Va.) got the better of an outstanding performance from both goalies, stopping all 10 of the RedHawks attempts. Miller was the only one able to break through, as he found the back of the net in the 10th round to give the Huskies a second point.
