ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Three student-athletes from No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey have been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, announced by the committee on Friday. The Huskies nominees for the best annual player in college hockey include fifth-year defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta), fifth-year forward Kyler Kupka (Camrose, Alberta) and senior forward Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland).
Awarded annually to college hockey's top player, the Hobey Baker's tremendously popular fan-voting will run from now until Sunday, March 10 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website https://www.hobeybaker.com/vote. Follow the prompts to make your selection from this year's outstanding crop of over 80 college hockey players representing 64 NCAA Division I schools. Phase two of fan balloting will come from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists beginning March 20 and closing March 31. The fans' vote accounts for a percentage of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.
Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
After missing the last 18 games of the 2022-23 season due to a season-ending injury, Anhorn returned to the ice for the Huskies this season and earns his second consecutive spot on the watch list for college hockey's most prestigious honor. The blue-liner from Calgary, Alberta currently leads the Huskies in assists (17), points (20) and plus/minus (+12) while once again leading the top power play unit for SCSU. Anhorn's 17 assists rank fourth among NCHC blue liners and rank in the top-15 nationally. The Husky senior's 20 points marks his third consecutive season of reaching the 20-point mark after 20 points (7g/13a) in 2021-22 with Union and 25 points (5g/20a) a season ago. Anhorn was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week after the opening weekend of play (Oct. 7-8) and has produced two or more tallies in four games this season, including two in the past three games (Jan. 13 at Denver and Jan. 19 vs. North Dakota). For his career, Anhorn has scored 21 goals and 60 assist for 81 points in 111 career games.
Kupka elected to use his fifth year of eligibility to return to the Huskies in 2023-24 and has produced a career year to-date. Through just 22 games, the Camrose, Alberta native has scored nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points, marks which are nearing his career-high totals of 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 35 games last season. Kupka has been a consistent scoring presence for the Huskies, as he found the back of the net in 7 of 11 series and scored a point in 10 of 11 series this season, and is tied with Anhorn for the team lead in plus/minus at +12. For his career, Kupka has scored 27 goals and 46 assists for 73 points in 129 games.
Miettinen has led the offensive charge for the Huskies all season with his team-leading 13 goals, a new career-best in a single season for Miettinen. Miettinen leads the Huskies in goals (13) and ranks third in points (18) while ranking eighth and 27th in the NCHC in those categories, respectively. He became the 39th member of St. Cloud State's 100-point club on Jan. 19 against North Dakota, netting his sixth power play goal of the season in the third period. The Husky forward scored in six consecutive games between Oct. 20 and Nov. 11, the longest scoring streak by a Husky since Ryan Lasch produced the same mark in the 2007-08 season (Oct. 27 - Nov. 23, 2007). Miettinen scored his 10th goal against Michigan on Nov. 25 to become just the ninth Husky to record four consecutive seasons with 10 or more goals. He joins Chris Scheid (1987-91), Tim Hanus (1988-92), Jeff Saterdalen (1988-92), Dave Paradise (1993-97), Jason Goulet (1995-99), Ryan Lasch (2006-10), Garrett Roe (2007-11) and Easton Brodzinski (five seasons, 2017-22) as the only Huskies to score 10+ goals in four seasons. Miettinen has powered the Huskies power play unit through the first half of the season, scoring six of the team's 16 goals on the man advantage. The Husky senior's six power play goals ranks fourth in the NCHC and 12th nationally. For his career, Miettinen has scored 46 goals and 55 assists for 101 points. His 11 career game-winning goals rank seventh all-time in program history, as he sits a four-way tie with Tim Hanus (1988-92), Garrett Roe (2007-11) and Joey Benik (2012-16).
