Burnevik scores twice, Salquist notches game-winner in 3-1 victory
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 12/14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (8-3-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) used a three-goal second period to vault its way to a 3-1 victory and series sweep over Miami (3-7-2, 0-2-0 NCHC) on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored twice to increase his team lead in goals while senior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) provided the game-winner.
The Huskies completely dominated the first two periods of play, outshooting the RedHawks 33-9 in the opening 40 minutes of the game. However, it took 22 minutes for SCSU to get on the scoreboard, as Burnevik's first of the night opened the scoring at 2:37 in the second period. The play started with a turnover in the neutral zone, creating a 2-on-1 break with sophomore forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Burnevik. Hall waited and brought the RedHawk defender towards him before making a move around him and firing shot at the net. The Miami goalie made the initial save, but Burnevik was on the backside waiting for a rebound, where he hammered it home for a 1-0 lead.
Less than 90 seconds later, it was Salquists's turn. First, the Husky senior earned one of his eight faceoff wins from the left circle, passing the puck back to sophomore forward Daimon Gardner (Eagle Lake, Ontario). Gardner took the puck and skated behind the net, attempted a wrap-around wrister. Once again, the Miami goalie made the first save, but Salquist was there waiting for the rebound, one-timing home a goal to double SCSU's lead.
SCSU's young guns teamed up for its third goal in less than 10 minutes at the 10:33 mark of the second period when Burnevik notched his second goal of the night. Freshman defenseman Colin Ralph (Maple Grove, Minn.) had the puck at the point on the left side and sent a pass to the backside, where Hall got his stick and deflected right towards Burnevik, who was alone with the goalie, walking around him for a beauty of a goal and a 3-0 lead.
Miami was able to find the back of the net with a power play goal in the third period, but sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) made seven of his 16 saves in the third period to close the door and seal the victory.
