Posch makes 25 saves, Huskies score twice on the power play
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 11/10 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (9-3-0, 3-0-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and kept No. 7/8 Colorado College at bay in a 3-2 win on Friday night at Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs. The Huskies scored two power play goals and didn't allow a 5-on-5 goal in the victory.
The Huskies opened the scoring on the game's first power play, scoring just nine seconds into the man advantage on sophomore forward Verner Miettinen's (Espoo, Finland) second score of the season. The goal was scored after senior defenseman Josh Luedtke's (Minnetonka, Minn.) shot from the point created a rebound in the slot where the Tigers failed to get a body on Miettinen, who backhanded the puck to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead 9:45 into the first period.
SCSU then extended its lead to 2-0 early in the second period when sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) forced a CC turnover in the offensive zone and was left all alone in the slot, beating Kaidan Mbereko in the five-hole for the score. CC responded with a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 7:04 mark of the period, but then SCSU pushed its lead back to two with a power play goal of its own just over three minutes later. Colorado College had an odd man rush while shorthanded, but missed a pass and turned over the puck to freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.), who started a 2-on-1 breakaway the other way and finished with a forehand, backhand goal that ended up being the game-winning goal.
CC scored an extra attacker goal late in the third period, but SCSU held off a Tiger rally with sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) making nine of his 25 saves in the final period to seal the victory.
