Gardner scores Huskies lone goal, disallowed second period goal takes away equalizing score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) seemingly tied the game in the second period, but had a goal disallowed before ultimately falling, 4-1, to No. 2 Boston College (4-1-0, 0-0-0 HEA) on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sophomore forward Daimon Gardner (Eagle Lake, Ontario) scored the Huskies lone goal, while freshman forward Gavyn Thoreson's (Andover, Minn.) goal in the second period was reviewed and overturned as a no-goal due to goaltender interference.

Boston College jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a late first period goal from Will Vote and a power play goal in the second period from Gabe Perreault. The Huskies then cut the Eagles lead in half with Gardner's score, as sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) went to work on the forecheck, forcing a turnover behind the net where Thoreson was able to intercept the puck and feed Gardner in front of the net. Gardner was patient and waited for an Eagle defender to skate by him before sinking a wrist shot past the goalie.

Just a few minutes later, SCSU seemed to tie the score on a rebound attempt from Thoreson, but upon further review, the referees determined Thoreson interfered with the goaltender, overturning the call. Boston College then scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period and seal the game with an empty net goal in the third period.

Thoreson had the primary assist on Gardner's goal, his first assist of the season.
Sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) continued his hot start to the second in the faceoff dot, going 8-5 in the circle.

NOTES

With the loss, SCSU moves to 4-2-0 all-time against Boston College.
SCSU had a slight advantage, 29-27, in the faceoff dot. Miettinen went 8-5 in the circle, while senior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) went 10-10.
Gardner scored his second goal of the season and third of his career.
Thoreson recorded his first career assist on Thoreson's goal.
Sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) made 17 saves in the game.
Gardner led the Huskies in shots on goal with four, while Thoreson and sophomore forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) each had three.
