
Mavericks Upend No. 9 Huskies in OT

Gross scores a pair of goals, Clark notches first collegiate goal
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 9 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (9-5-0, 3-2-0 NCHC) dropped its series opener with Omaha (6-7-0, 4-3-0 NCHC), 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies erased a 2-1 to take a 3-2 lead after back-to-back goals from sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta), but couldn't hold its lead, giving up a third period goal and an overtime score to give the Mavericks the win.
Omaha jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring 9:01 into the game when Jimmy Glynn caused a turnover and fired a wrist shot to the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. SCSU then pulled back to even early in the second period when sophomore defenseman Warren Clark (Riverside, Ontario) recorded his first career goal at the 4:20 mark of the period. Clark had just jumped on the ice and worked his way left dot where sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) was able to find him for a one-timer and a goal.
After Omaha retook the lead with a Zach Urdahl goal, Gross nearly single-handedly gave the Huskies the lead with a pair of scored in just under two minutes. First, Gross created a turnover at the redline and started a 2-on-1 breakaway where he took the puck all the way past the left dot where he fired a wicked wrist shot for a score. Next, Gross won a faceoff and then worked his way to the front of the net, where junior forward Ethan AuCoin (Calgary, Alberta) found him and let Gross finish it off for a score a 3-2 lead.
Omaha's Zach Urdahl then scored 22 seconds into the third period, causing an overtime where Omaha's Sam Stange scored at the 1:48 mark to earn the win.
