Huskies beat No. 1 Cal State LA in four sets to close out 2024 Yotes Classic Showdown as Foley and Berran continue double-double streaks
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Volleyball (3-1, 0-0 NSIC) beat No. 1 Cal State LA in four sets – 25-15, 21-25, 25-11, 25-20 – on Saturday afternoon at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino, Calif. to close out its schedule at the Yotes Classic Showdown.
SCSU led the Golden Eagles (2-2, 0-0 CCAA) in kills (51-36), hitting percentage (.302-110), assists (44-32), service aces (9-2), block assists (18-10), total blocks (9.0-6.0) and digs (58-41). Fifth-year outside hitter Kenzie Foley (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) and junior setter Emma Berran (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) led the Huskies in the upset victory, posting a 16-kill, 10-dig double-double and a 38-assist, 13 dig double-double, respectively.
The Huskies have now won their last two matches against No. 1 ranked teams after previously going 0-28. In those first 28 matches, the Huskies had only won one set in three matches and had never won two sets. This afternoon's match was the sixth match vs. a No. 1 ranked team in the past three seasons.
SCSU won its final three matches of the tournament against No. 12 Chaminade, No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino and No. 1 Cal State LA after dropping its first match against No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona.
TOP HUSKIES
Overall, we had a very solid weekend. Obviously, Cal State LA had a fantastic run last season and is a team that knows how to win. Their opposite is probably the best right side in the country. She has the ability to score from anywhere on the court – in the front row, back row and as a blocker. I thought we did a decent job of neutralizing and played enough defense against their four attackers to really limit them. We had a good chunk of our attackers over 300 efficiency, which will always give us a chance to compete. We out-blocked them which really helped us out defensively and we got quality block touches that we turned into transition points. It was a very fun weekend in southern California and we learned what it will take to compete against some of the best teams in the country this year.
