
No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Can’t Hold Lead in Setback to No. 13 Arizona State

Huskies grab 3-1 lead before giving up five unanswered goals
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After taking a 3-1 lead in the second period, No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-10-0, 4-7-0 NCHC) gave up five unanswered goals in a 6-3 loss to No. 13 Arizona State (12-8-1, 7-4-0 NCHC) on Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Sun Devils scored three goals in a 3:32 stretch midway through the second period to take a 4-3 lead and grab momentum for the rest of the game.
ASU broke through first, scoring at the 12:28 mark of the first period when Cullen Potter took a 3-on-1 all by himself and sent a wrister that snuck through the five-hole for a 1-0 lead. However, SCSU responded just 1:25 later on the power play when junior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) grabbed a rebound on the weakside and fired a wrist shot top shelf to tie the score at 1-1.
The Huskies jumped out quick in the second period, scoring back-to-back goals in the first five minutes of the middle frame. First, sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) found himself all alone in the slot for a wrist shot and score on a set play after a faceoff win from sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland). Then, senior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) hammered home a rebound off a shot from the point from senior defenseman Karl Falk (Vasteras, Sweden) at the 4:34 mark of the period.
Arizona State then grabbed the lead with three straight goals between the 11:04 and 14:36 marks of the third period and added a power play goal and empty net goal in the third period to take the game, 6-3.

- Burnevik had the primary assist on Ingram's goal, his ninth assist of the season to extend his team-lead to 18 points.
- Miettinen recorded an assist for his ninth assist of the season while going 72.2 percent (13-5) in the faeoff dot to move to 58.6 percent (181-128) on the season.
- Senior forward Nick Portz (St. Cloud, Minn.) recorded his first assist of the season and first point since scoring two goals against Augustana on Oct. 25.
- Falk recorded his third assist on the season, setting a new single season high.
- Sophomore forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) shifted over to center and set a new career-high with seven faceoff wins.
