Huskies score two power play goals and three goals overall in first period, Shostak earns first collegiate win in net
BEMIDJI, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) scored three goals in the first period and held on for its first win of the season, beating Bemidji State (2-1-0, 0-0-0 CCHA), 3-2, on Friday evening at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. Two of the Huskies three goals in the opening frame came on the power play, while freshman goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) made 25 saves to earn his first collegiate win.
SCSU took an early lead in the game with a goal at 3:01 of the first period when freshman defenseman Tanner Henricks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hammered home a rebound for a 1-0 lead and his first collegiate goal. Junior forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) and senior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) created the chance by getting past the Beaver defense and getting shots on net. Bemidji State goalie Raythan Robbins stopped the first two chances, but not the third as Henricks grabbed a rebound in the slot and went front-hand, back-hand for the score.
Bemidji State scored the next goal on the power play, but SCSU then responded with back-to-back power plays to take a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored the first power play tally when a loose puck found his stick in the slot and left him all alone in the front of the net. He made a beautiful move to deke out the goalie and find the back of the net at 9:58. Seven minutes later near the end of the period, the Huskies doubled their lead on the second goal of the season from sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.). SCSU controlled the puck on the man advantage with senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) making a drop pass on the left side of the ice to senior forward Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.) at the blue line, who then moved the puck quickly over to Burnevik at the right dot, where the Huskies leading goal-scorer ripped a one-timer that quickly found the back of the net.
In the second period, Bemidji State scored the only goal of the period with a power play score at 15:42. Each team had a chance on the power play in the third period, including a key penalty kill from the Huskies with 4:06 remaining in the game, but neither team found the back of the net. Shostak made eight of his 25 saves in the final frame to shut down the Beavers in the series opener.
