Huskies earn seventh consecutive victory over in-state foe
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) scored two goals in each of the first two periods to finish a series sweep and beat Bemidji State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 CCHA), 4-2, on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Four different Huskies scored while sophomore Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) earned the win in net while making 32 saves.
The first period was filled with penalties with the Huskies getting five power play chances and the Beavers one in the first 20 minutes. SCSU cashed in on their third time on the man advantage when freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal. Senior defenseman Max Smolinski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) created the chance when he fired a shot towards the net from above the left circle. The shot hit Roed in the face mask, dropped right in front of the goalie and Roed was able to keep his composure and be the first to find the puck, burying it through the five-hole for the game's first score. The Huskies then doubled their lead with 55 seconds left in the first period senior defenseman Josh Zinger (Red Deer, Alberta) was fed in the high slot from junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) on a 3-on-2 break. Zinger's wrist shot was too quick for the Beaver goalie to stop and the Huskies went into the first intermission up 2-0.
In the second period, Bemidji State was able to cut the lead down to 2-1 at 6:37 in the period, but the Huskies responded by scoring the next two goals to extend its lead to 4-1. First up was freshman forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.), scoring his second goal of the season at the 14:44 mark of the period. He grabbed the puck behind the net following a dump pass from junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and skated with the puck all the way to the high slot just in front of the blue line, where he fired in a shot that deflected off a Beaver defender and up into the air and eventually behind the goalie for the score. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) then scored the Huskies fourth and final goal of the game with nine seconds left in the period. With SCSU cycling and Bemidji looking for a change, the Huskies kept the puck in the offensive zone more than a few times. Sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.) ended up with the puck behind the goal line and fed Zinger up at the left point, who quickly moved the puck over to an open Burnevik at the top of the right circle. Burnevik had all the space he needed and fired a one-timer on net, beating the goalie top right for his third goal of the season and a 4-1 lead.
The Huskies allowed a power play goal in the first minute of the third period, but then killed off a major penalty just a few minutes to keep the momentum on SCSU's side and secure the 4-2 win.
