Huskies erase two two-goal deficits but can’t breakthrough for lead
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (5-3-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) came back from two two-goal deficits but ultimately fell to No. 3 Western Michigan (5-2-0, 1-0-0 NCHC), 6-5, on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Huskies and Broncos combined for six goals in a wild third period which saw the Huskies score twice in three minutes to tie the game with less than six minutes remaining before Western Michigan scored the game-winning goal less than a minute later on the power play.
The Broncos scored the first two goals of the game in the first period before the Huskies second line made a beautiful play to cut the lead back to one and keep SCSU in the game. With just over two minutes left in the opening frame, freshman forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.) created a turnover behind WMU's goal on the forecheck and passed to freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) in the slot and then quickly over to sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) on the backside for the score. Burnevik scored for the ninth time this season and moved his point streak to 10 consecutive games.
The second period started with a five-minute power play for the Huskies, and SCSU took advantage, scoring 1:03 into the period with junior forward Tyson Gross' (Calgary, Alberta) second goal of the season. Gross and senior defenseman Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.) played a two-man game and switched places on top of the circles with Wylie feeding Gross for a one-timer that found nylon and tied the score at 2-2. A tip-in for WMU at 16:48 gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
In the third period, senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.) tied the game at 3-3 just 3:32 into the period, but Western Michigan would respond just 20 seconds later to retake the lead. Late in the period, sophomore defenseman Thor Byfuglien's (Roseau, Minn.) first goal of the season made the score 5-4 with 8:57 left in the game. The play started with Byfuglien intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and starting a 2-on-1 breakaway with sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.). Byfuglien drop passed the puck to Thoreson, who carried it all the way under the goal line and fired it at the back of the Bronco goalie. Byfuglien was near the crease and saw the puck was loose behind the goalie and pushed it across the goal line for the score. Then, with 5:39 left in the game, redshirt junior Jack Rogers (East Northport, N.Y.) finished a breakaway chance on a beautiful feed from junior forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) to tie the score at 5-5. However, SCSU was called for a penalty just 16 seconds later and the Broncos capitalized with a power play goal for the game-winning score.
