St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Ready for Veteran's Day matchup with St. Thomas

Huskies and Tommies to play Tuesday at Lee and Penny Anderson Arena
THE MATCHUP
- St. Cloud State Men's Hockey will make its first trip to the newly opened Lee and Penny Anderson Arena for a rare Tuesday game on Veteran's Day against St. Thomas on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on MidCo Sports + and on the radio on KNSI (99.3 FM / 1450 AM) with the voice of the Huskies Jim Erickson will handle play-by-play duties with former Husky captain Dave Reichel on color commentary. SCSU is coming off a one-point weekend at No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 7-8), falling 4-0 on Friday before dropping a 3-2 overtime game on Saturday. St. Thomas has played since Oct. 31-Nov. 1 when the Tommies split a series at then-No. 18 Minnesota State, falling 3-1 on Friday before a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY
- St. Thomas pulled ahead in the all-time series with its 4-3 win in the season opener with a 26-23-0 mark against the Huskies. The two schools opened up the season for the fifth consecutive time on Oct. 4 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center where the Tommies pulled out a 4-3 win. The Huskies fell behind 3-0 before scoring three third-period goals to tie the score at 3-3 only to take a major penalty and giving up a goal with just under five minutes remaining to take the 4-3 setback. St. Cloud State has a convincing 7-2-0 mark since the Tommies moved to Division-I ahead of the 2021-22 season. Prior to the D-I era for both programs, all matchups between the two schools happened prior to 1980. This will be the final nonconference series between the two programs with St. Thomas slated to join the NCHC in 2026-27.
DYNAMIC DUO
- If you don't know them, get to know them. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik and junior forward Tyson Gross have each jumped out to a hot start to the 2025-26 campaign and are starting to become household names in the nationwide conversation. The duo each began the year by scoring in the first nine games of the season and currently rank in the top-15 in the nation in scoring. Gross leads the team with four goals and 11 assists for 15 points while Burnevik has 10 goals and four assists for 14 points to rank ninth and 14th in the NCAA in scoring, respectively. Burnevik's six power play goals and three game-winning goals lead the NCAA while his 10 goals rank third. Gross has won the second-most faceoffs in the nation at 149 and ranks sixth in the NCAA in assists with 11.
LETHAL POWER PLAY
- The Huskies have been lethal on the man advantage to open the 2025-26 season, scoring 18 of its 37 goals on the man advantage with at least one power play tally in 10 of 11 games this season and five games with multiple power play goals. SCSU's 18 power play goals lead the nation while its 34.6 percent success rate (18-of-52) ranks second. The Huskies' four power play goals against Vermont on Oct. 18 were its most since scoring four against St. Thomas on Oct. 7, 2023 while sophomore forward Austin Burnevik netted two of the four power play tallies to become the first Husky to score two power play goals in the same game since Grant Cruikshank scored two at Omaha on Feb. 24, 2023. Burnevik's six power play goals are also the top mark in the nation.
NO STOPPING BURNEY
- After becoming the first freshman in program history to lead the team in both goals and points in 2024-25, sophomore forward Austin Burnevik is picking up right where he left off a season ago. The rising sophomore ranks among the nation's best among goal scorers, ranking first in power play goals with six, first in game-winning goals with three and second in overall goals with 10.
- The 2024-25 All-NCHC Rookie Team honoree opened the season with a nine-game point streak, which is the longest streak in the nation this season. He also scored in the last two games of last season, moving his point streak to 11 games, the longest scoring streak by a Husky since Jonny Brodzinski had an 13-game point streak from Dec. 12, 2012 - Feb. 2, 2012. Since 2002-03, only six Husky skaters have recorded seven point streaks of 10+ games. Burnevik is joined by Garrett Roe (14, 2007-08), Jonny Brodzinski (13, 2012-13), Drew LeBlanc (13, 2012-13), Ryan Lasch (11, 2007-08; 10, 2007-08) and Tyson Gross (10, 2025-26).
- Burnevik scored a goal in five consecutive games between Oct. 18 and Nov. 1, the longest streak since Veeti Miettinen scored in six straight games between Oct. 20 – Nov. 11, 2023.
GROSS IN THE DOT
- Junior forward Tyson Gross has been dominate in the faceoff circle this season, winning a NCAA-best 61.8 percent (149-92) of his faceoffs through 11 games. Gross posted a NCAA-high 20 wins in both games of the Alaska Anchorage series. Gross went 20-2 in the dot on Friday and 20-5 on Saturday in the series sweep of Alaska Anchorage.
- Gross has scored in 10 of 11 games this season, collecting four goals and team-best 11 assists for 15 points, ranking sixth in the NCAA in assists and ninth in points.
- After scoring just five points in SCSU's first 13 games of the 2024-25 season, Gross scored 20 points (7g/13a) in the last 23 games last season. Dating back to Dec. 6, 2024, Gross has produced a point per game at 1.00 ppg with 35 points (11g/24a) in 35 games.
- Gross scored a power play goal and had two assists in SCSU's 5-1 win over Western Michigan (Nov. 1) to extend his point streak to 10 consecutive games dating back to March 15, 2025. His 10-game point streak is the just the seventh streak of 10+ games in program history since 2002-03.
- Gross' three points match a career-high, the third time he has reached that mark after also reaching that mark against Omaha on Dec. 7, 2024 and against Colorado College on Feb. 21, 2025.
ONE MORE TIME
- A key emphasis for the Huskies this season was to score one more goal per game than last season when SCSU averaged 2.19 goals per game. 11 games into the season, the Huskies are well on their way to accomplishing their goal in 2025-26, scoring 3.36 goals per game (37 goals overall).
- SCSU scored five goals in four consecutive games between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1, marking its first streak of four consecutive games with five or more goals since Nov. 19 – Dec. 9, 2022, when the Huskies scored five, seven, six and seven goals.
- SCSU's 3.36 goals per game ranks 16th in the NCAA.
- The scoring has been balanced as well with 16 Huskies finding the back of the net with sophomore forward Austin Burnevik leading the way with 10 goals and a nation-leading six power play tallies.
- The power play has been potentially responsible for the added production through the first third of the season, with the Huskies finding the back of the net on the man advantage in 10 of 11 games this season and 18 times overall. SCSU's 34.6 percent (18-52) success rate on the power play ranks second nationally and is more than double its success rate from last season (16.8%, 16-95).

- GAME 1 - 4-0 loss at Minnesota Duluth (11-7-25)
- In the loss, the Huskies drop to 84-69-11 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and 30-38-3 against the Bulldogs in Duluth.
- SCSU has now dropped the last seven meetings between the two programs in Duluth.
- SCSU was shutout for the first time this season and for the first time since Feb. 7, 2025 when Western Michigan won 4-0 in Kalamazoo.
- The Huskies had a season low 18 shots on goal, 13 shots lower than its previous season low of 31 shots on goal set three times.
- SCSU won the faceoff battle, 26-21, with junior forward Tyson Gross leading the way at 12-9 in the dot.
- Gross has won more than faceoffs than not and had 10+ faceoff wins in every game this season.
- Sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins made 25+ saves for the fourth time in four games this season.
- GAME 2 - 3-2 OT loss at Minnesota Duluth (11-8-25)
- In the loss, the Huskies drop to 84-70-11 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and 30-39-3 against the Bulldogs in Duluth.
- SCSU has now dropped the last eight meetings between the two programs in Duluth.
- The Huskies went 1-of-6 on the power play, scoring a goal on the man advantage for the 10th time in 11 games.
- SCSU won the faceoff battle, 31-29, marking the eighth in 11 games the Huskies have had the edge in the dot.
- Junior forward Tyson Gross recorded two points for the fourth time this season and 15th time in his career. His goal was his fourth of the season while his assist was his 11th as he takes the team lead with 15 points.
- Junior forward Barrett Hall scored his third power play goal of the season and fourth overall with his second period score.
- Freshman goaltender Yan Shostak made a season-high 32 saves in the game. He continued to be extremely strong in 5-on-5 hockey, with only nine of his 19 goals allowed all season coming in 5-on-5 situations.
- Senior defenseman Cooper Wylie, senior forward Adam Ingram and sophomore defenseman Thor Byfuglien all recorded single assists, recording their seventh, sixth and first assists of the season, respectively.
