Huskies earn dual victories over Eau Claire, Saint John’s and Saint Benedict’s

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Swim & Dive swept its dual competition in its home meets at Halenbeck Hall, beating Eau Claire on Friday and Saint John's / Saint Benedict's on Saturday. The Huskies recorded 54 first place finishes in the 64 events competed in over the two days of dual competition.

NOTABLE FINISHES – MEN

The Huskies men's team had 14 first-place finishes against the Blu Golds with three Huskies earning multiple top placements. Freshman Bernardo Mier y Teran Eljure (Mexico City, Mexico) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.80) and 100-yard freestyle (9:55.25), while senior Matt Pietsch (Cheyenne, Wyo.) earned first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.77) and 200-yard backstroke (1:54.88) and junior Reid Tigges (Spencer, Iowa) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.64) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.10).

The women had 15 first place finishes on Friday with senior Izzy Koebele (Bismarck, N.D.), freshman Margherita Spada (Genoa, Italy) and sophomore Emma Hoppman (Red Wing, Minn.) leading the way. Koebele finished first in the distance events in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.30) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:52.22) while Spada finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.75) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.42) and Hoppman in the 50-yard freestyle (24.61) and 100-yard freestyle (54.48).

On Saturday, two Huskies led the way with two event wins each. Junior Piotr Kowalczyk (Warsaw, Poland) earned wins in the 100-yard butterfly (50.97) and 100-yard backstroke (51.75) while junior Jimmy Nord (Chisago City, Minn.) won both dive events with scores of 303.10 in the 1-meter dive and 299.20 in the 3-meter dive.

Junior Kate Turner (Greendale, Wis.) earned wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.74) and 500-yard freestyle (5:25.42) while senior Natalie Gneiser (Baraboo, Wis.) finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.63) and 200-yard IM (2:16.41).
