SCSU leaves 13 points at the free throw line
Duluth, MN. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (1-3) battled against No. 13 Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon, but came up short in a tight game. The Huskies were able to get to the line 28 times but only converted on 15 of those free throw attempts.
St. Cloud State got into an early deficit as they nearly went the first five minutes without any points. Only trailing 7-0 at the 15:14 mark of the first half, Wyatt Hawks put the Huskies on the board with a finish inside. SCSU started to find their offense as a putback dunk by Izaac Neal capped off an 11-0 run as they took an 11-7 lead. While the offense got going, the defense stood tall as they held Michigan Tech scoreless for over six minutes of action. St. Cloud State continued their momentum as a rip away by Nate Dahl led to a three-pointer by Will Brands as MTU called a timeout as SCSU took a five-point lead. Following that timeout, Michigan Tech caught fire from three as they made five three-pointers with four of them coming from Ty Fernholz. St. Cloud State went into the halftime break trailing 35-28.
Through the first seven minutes of the second half, Michigan Tech doubled up their lead as a layup put them up 47-33. St. Cloud State chipped away and were able to get back into the game by drawing fouls on both ends. Offensively, SCSU put continuous pressure on the rim to get to the free throw line while on the defensive end, they were aggressive in crashing the glass to stockpile foul calls. At the 11:59 mark of the second half, SCSU was able to get in the bonus and begin their comeback attempt. Luke Winkel scored a fall-away two pointers with 8:16 left in the game as a 10-0 run forced a MTU timeout as the Huskies cut the deficit to two points. Lee Marks III scored the next five for St. Cloud State as an and-one with 5:43 on the clock gave them their first lead since the first half with the score set at 53-52. As time ticked away, SCSU found themselves down four points with 1:29 remaining. Marks III, who had a tremendous defensive performance, poked the ball away from Marcus Tomashek and outlet the ball up to Azayah Washington who slammed home a crucial score. Tomashek responded on their ensuing possession with a tough jumper to give Tech a four-point lead with 33 seconds left. The Huskies would have to foul after a missed shot on their possession. Now trailing by five points with nine seconds left, Washington knocked down a big three with 1.5 seconds left to bring SCSU within two points. Again, having to foul, the Huskies sent Jesse Napgezek to the free throw line where he made both shots to seal the game. St. Cloud State would fall 59-63 in a tough battle against No. 13 Michigan Tech.
