No. 7 Minnesota Duluth Shuts out St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey 4-0 in Series Opener

Huskies limited to 18 shots on goal and shutout for first time this season
DULUTH, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-4-0, 1-2-0 NCHC) dropped the series opener with No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (9-2-0, 2-1-0 NCHC), 4-0, on Friday night at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. The Bulldogs outshot the Huskies 29-18 and scored a goal in each period before adding on an empty netter in the final minute.
Both teams kept the pace moving in the first period, but Minnesota Duluth was the first team able to break through in the game's opening 20 minutes, scoring at the 14:02 mark of the periods on a goal from Adam Kleber. The goal happened in a 4-on-4 situation when the Huskies turned over the puck in its offensive zone, creating a 3-on-2 rush the other way for UMD. Kleber played the puck back to his trailing defenseman partner Ty Hanson, who fed him right back at the left dot for a one-timer score.
UMD doubled their lead earlier in the second period on a goal 2:52 into the middle frame. SCSU had three power play chances in the second period, but was only able to muster one shot on goal and failed found the back of the net.
The Bulldogs then tacked on a power play goal and an empty net goal in the third period to round the scoring out at 4-0.

- Junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) was 12-9 in the faceoff dot and led the team in shots on goal with three.
- Sophomore Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) made 28 saves in net for the Huskies.
- In the loss, the Huskies drop to 84-69-11 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and 30-38-3 against the Bulldogs in Duluth.
- SCSU has now dropped the last seven meetings between the two programs in Duluth.
- SCSU was shutout for the first time this season and for the first time since Feb. 7, 2025 when Western Michigan won 4-0 in Kalamazoo.
- The Huskies had a season low 18 shots on goal, 13 shots lower than its previous season low of 31 shots on goal set three times.
- SCSU won the faceoff battle, 26-21, with Gross leading the way at 12-9 in the dot.
- Gross has won more than faceoffs than not and had 10+ faceoff wins in every game this season.
- Berzins made 25+ saves for the fourth time in four games this season.
