Huskies take lead in second period before dropping 3-2 in OT
DULUTH, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-5-0, 1-3-0 NCHC) dropped a tight overtime contest to No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (10-2-0, 3-1-0 NCHC), 3-2, on Saturday at Amsoil Arena on Saturday. The Huskies scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead, but UMD responded with the game-tying goal in the third period and an overtime score to secure a sweep.
In an even first period where UMD outshot the Huskies 12-10 and six total penalties were called, the Bulldogs found the back of the net first, scoring a power play goal from Callum Arnott at 5:27 of the opening frame. SCSU had two chances on the power play in the period with the first being cut short after four seconds and the second registering just one shot on goal.
SCSU took a lead with back-to-back goals in the third period, first scoring on the power play when junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) found the back of the net at the 3:24 mark of the period. Junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) brought the puck across the blue line on the entry and worked his way to the slot before being poke-checked by UMD. The puck was pushed forward and right to Hall, who snuck past both Bulldog defenders, grabbed the puck on his backhand, spun and flung a shot past the goaltender to tie the score. SCSU then took the lead near the end of the period when sophomore defenseman Thor Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn.) fed Gross at the blue line and then he raced past the defense and fired a shot nearside for the score and the lead.
UMD was able to strike early in the third period to tie the score at 3-3, scoring 3:10 into the period on a goal from Grayden Siepmann. UMD's leading scorer, Max Plante then scored in the overtime period to secure the win for the Bulldogs.
