St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (3-6, 0-4 NSIC) dropped their third straight game as they were defeated 72-68 to Augustana Thursday evening. SCSU missed a potential game-tying three with 13 seconds remaining as they were outscored 18-11 in the fourth quarter.
Three minutes into the game, Augustana came out with a 7-3 lead after finishing a layup. A 12-2 run capped off by Jada Eggebrecht finding Paige Lambe in the post who finished for a layup gave SCSU a 14-9 lead. The Vikings would respond with a 7-0 run to end the quarter as they led 16-14 after one. The Vikings held a steady lead for the majority of the second quarter as they held a 10-point lead with 21 seconds left until halftime. Eggebrecht added a spark at the end of the half as she finished a running floater as SCSU went into halftime trailing 35-27.
The first five minutes of the third quarter saw the teams trade buckets as SCSU could not cut into the lead and Augustana could not take control of the game. At the 4:59 mark of the third, CJ Adamson drilled a corner three and followed that with an assist to Reagan Briggs who cashed her own three. The three by Briggs cut the deficit down to two points. The teams traded layups before Brynn Olson finished inside to tie the game at 49. The Vikings retook the lead with a pair of free throws, but Eggebrecht burst through the paint and finished a layup through contact for the and-one. Her free throw swished home as SCSU led for the first time since the first quarter. A triple by Rachel Kottke with 36 seconds left in the quarter gave SCSU a 57-54 lead headed into the fourth. The defenses of both teams ramped up as the game would be tied at 61 halfway through the final frame. With 4:17 left in the game, the Vikings finished a layup which marked the start of an 8-0 run. An inside finish by Abigail O'Reilly stopped the bleeding as SCSU trailed 69-63 with two minutes left. The Huskies had one last burst in them as an offensive rebound and putback by Rachel Kottke set the score at 71-68 with 18 seconds remaining. Following a timeout by Augustana, SCSU smothered on the inbounds as they forced a five-second violation as they now had a chance to tie the game. The Huskies came away with a good shot attempt as Eggebrecht fired a three, but she was unable to connect to tie the game. St. Cloud State would have to foul where Augustana knocked down one of two free throws to put the game at multiple possessions. SCSU was ultimately defeated 72-68 against the Vikings.
