Huskies score extra attacker and OT goals for first two-goal comeback in two years
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (14-18-1, 7-15-1 NCHC) overcame a two-goal deficit late in the second period to comeback and beat Minnesota Duluth (12-18-3, 8-13-2 NCHC), 3-2, in overtime on Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Huskies pulled their goalie with just over four minutes left and then scored an extra attacker goal from junior defenseman Josh Zinger (Red Deer, Alberta) with 20 seconds remaining. In the extra frame, junior defenseman Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal to lift the Huskies to victory.
UMD controlled the opening period of the game, outshooting the Huskies 10-3 and scoring at the 16:54 mark of the period on a power play goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs then doubled their lead with a goal midway through the second frame on a goal from Anthony Menghini. It appeared the score would remain 2-0 heading into the second intermission, but SCSU was able to break through with just under two minutes left in the period when senior forward Nick Portz (St. Cloud, Minn.) stole the puck away from a Bulldog skater in front of their net and jammed the puck through the five-hole for a score.
In the third period, SCSU outshot the Bulldogs 14-9, but it took nearly the entire period before they were able to score the equalizer. Sophomore forward Daimon Gardner (Eagle Lake, Ontario) made the game-tying goal happen, as he entered the offensive zone on the rush with an extra attacker on the ice and carried the puck all the way around the net and attempted a wrap-around attack. His shot was stopped, but Gardner got back his own rebound and fed Zinger between the slot and the left dot, who fanned on his first attempt and then rifled a wrist shot past the goalie for the score.
In the overtime period, SCSU found itself on the power play and the Huskies top power play unit went to work. Freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) worked the puck to Wylie at the top of the right circle. He moved down to the right dot and fired a shot between the Bulldog defender and the past the goalie for the game-winning goal.
